As a former teacher, this is one of my favorite times of the year! 👩‍🏫🎒📚📓✂️✏️🖍

I absolutely LOVE brand-new school supplies, unmarked workbooks, and pristine paper! I get a strange sense of joy when I see a perfect set of crayons or colored pencils! Calendars, notebooks, and organizers still thrill me! 💝

And knowing that fall is just around the corner (I've already seen some leaves starting to turn!) makes me love the Back-to-School season even more!!! 🍂

My kids, on the other hand, have mixed feelings about it. 😂

One is NOT thrilled to go back to "just sitting there for 6.5 hours every day!" 🙄

Another is very much looking forward to seeing his friends again! 🥰

And the youngest is the most excited of all of them, because she loves ALL things school-related! 😍

A bad tax season in your business can feel like a *really* bad sunburn—once it happens, you NEVER want to go through it again!

So, if you’re looking for some “sunscreen” to help keep you from getting “burned” next tax season, here are a few preventive tips:

It's amazing how quickly one month of procrastination can turn into six months of catch-up. 😳

Try blocking off one day each month just for bookkeeping. If you stay on top of it, it usually doesn't take very long!

Plus, your financial reports will actually be useful when making business decisions (like whether you can afford that new piece of equipment or hire another employee).

At a certain point, spreadsheets just aren't enough. The biggest issues I see are missed transactions, duplicate entries, data-entry mistakes, and the amount of time it takes to enter everything manually.

If your business might grow into more than just a side-hustle, with employees, multiple revenue streams, or more complexity, choose software that can grow with you. Look for things like:

For example, simpler platforms like Wave or entry-level FreshBooks work well for freelancers, while QuickBooks or Xero are often better long-term scaling tools.

If you’re service-based (consulting, coaching, etc.), most platforms will work well. If you’re product-based, pay close attention to inventory features:

If inventory is a big part of your business, this question matters a lot.

Higher transaction volume usually means more need for:

Did anyone get caught driving in that hailstorm last week? 😬

When visibility is limited, even a routine drive can become stressful! It's hard to feel confident about where you're going when you can't clearly see the road ahead.

And the same is true when it comes to your business finances.

If you want to see the financial road to your business goals...
.. you're going to need to clear your "financial windshield" with good bookkeeping. 🚙

For example, let’s say that:

⛈️ You haven’t reconciled your bank and credit card accounts in months.

❄️ You haven’t checked your A/R aging report in…. well, a while.

☔ And sometimes (OK, a lot of the time) you put business expenses on your personal card, and vice versa.

From a bookkeeping perspective, those are all things that “fog up” your financial windshield:

May is one of my favorite months of the year. 📅🥰

It’s that time of year when everyone just gives a huge sigh of relief!

Taxes are finally done (or at least extended 😅), spring has arrived, school is almost out, and cabin season is back. 🥳

My husband’s grandpa built a cabin “Up North” in the 1970s, and ever since then, weekends at “The Cabin” have been a family tradition. We all love going there… especially when we can spend time fishing, relaxing, playing games, and just being together. But getting ready for it is a lot of work.

There are clothes to pack (after checking the weather, of course!), meals to prep, fishing and swimming gear to load, kayaks to strap down, and somehow about a million things to double check before we leave. It’s exhausting before we even pull out of the driveway.

But then there’s this one glorious moment when I finally get to take a huge sigh of relief…

It's when we turn onto the highway and are finally northbound.

In that moment, everything is done. The bags are packed. The checklist is complete. The gas tank is full. Everyone is loaded up. And I can finally stop carrying all the mental weight of preparation.

I can physically feel myself relax.

And that feeling of peace and relief is exactly what I want my bookkeeping clients to experience most.

That’s actually one of the reasons I chose the name Northbound Bookkeeping. ❤️

So… be honest—how did it go this year?? 🙂 😫 😱 😬 🤔
