❗❗❗Parents, We Need Your Help With This One.❗❗❗
We’ve got a school bus safety problem, and this is something our entire community needs to take seriously.
This week alone, WCPD has received more than 12 different reports of vehicles passing school buses with their red lights flashing and stop arms extended. A majority of these violations have occurred along Prairie Hills Road near the Fox Hills Apartments.
And here’s one of the reasons we’re asking parents to help us spread the message:
Some of the drivers involved have been students.
So, parents—this might be a good conversation to have with your young drivers tonight.
We know Prairie Hills Road gets busy, especially before and after school. Between the BASC, WCHS, Rough Rider Center, Fox Hills Elementary School, apartment complexes, and regular traffic, there are a lot of vehicles moving through that area.
But when those red lights start flashing and that stop arm comes out, everything else can wait.
🛑 Red lights + stop arm = STOP.🛑
Not just the car directly behind the bus. Not just adults. Not just when you can see a child crossing.
Everyone required to stop must stop and remain stopped until it is safe and the bus signals are no longer activated.
Harlow’s Bus Service buses are equipped with cameras, and reported violations are being forwarded to WCPD for investigation. Passing a school bus with its red lights activated and stop arm extended can result in a $250 citation.🚓
But the ticket isn't really why we're making this post.
There are kids on the other side of that stop arm.
They’re walking across streets, stepping off buses, grabbing backpacks, talking with friends and sometimes doing the unpredictable things kids do. They shouldn't have to wonder whether the vehicle coming toward them is actually going to stop.
So please, help us out.
Talk to your teenagers. Talk to your family members. Share this with the new driver in your house. And when you're behind the wheel, set the example.
We would much rather see zero stop-arm violations next week than write a single $250 ticket.
Slow down. Pay attention. Stop for the bus. Help us get every kid to and from home safely.
