When the city of Houston was dealing with one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history, NFL player J.J. Watt went to work. The defensive end started a fundraising campaign through his foundation to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. After adding $100k himself, the fundraiser met its $200K goal in less than two hours.

Thanks to Watt and many generous individuals, more than $41.6 million was distributed through the Justin J. Watt Foundation. The foundation said – at the time – it was the largest crowdsourced fundraiser in world history.”

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month. No matter where you live, it is a good reminder to always be prepared for unexpected events such as natural disasters. If you haven’t, create a family emergency plan. The plan should include emergency contacts (like your homeowners insurance agent) and a map of where the emergency shut-off valves and breakers are for things like water and power at your home. Always have a first aid kit packed and spare batteries inside the house.

It is called the Miracle on the Hudson. On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 crash-landed on the Hudson River in New York City after hitting a flock of birds during takeoff. Captain Chesley Sullenberger (Sully) was the pilot at the time, and thanks to his skilled response and that of First Officer Jeffrey Skiles, all 150 passengers and five crew members survived after the plane landed on the Hudson River. As rescue crews and ferries pulled passengers to safety, Captain Sully calmly walked through the cabin twice to confirm that it was empty before leaving the airplane.

The plane was pulled from the river and is now on display at a museum in North Carolina. Captain Sully is no longer a pilot but is an author, public speaker, and aviation expert focusing on air safety.
