BE AWARE! BOATING RULES ARE CHANGING!

Mainers need to be aware of a new boater education law that will take effect on 1/1/2024. According to a recent news release from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, beginning January 1, 2024, a person born on or after January 1, 1999, may not operate a motorboat of 25 (HP) horsepower or greater for recreational boating purposes on inland waters of this State or territorial waters, unless that person is 12 years of age or older and has completed a boater safety and education course.

Registered Maine guides, commercial fishermen, merchant mariners and daily boat renters are exempt from this new ruling.

Anyone under the age of 12 may operate a motorboat alone on Maine waters if the engine is less than 10 HP. Operators under the age of 12 must be supervised, if the engine is between 10-25 horsepower. To operate a jet ski in Maine, you must be aged 16 or older.

Golf carts aren’t just for the local golf course anymore!!

Starting July 1, 2023, a golf cart may be driven on public streets or roads by a person over the age of 16 if they have a valid (unsuspended, unrevoked) driver’s license or learner’s permit. Existing Maine law states that the driver of a golf cart can only drive on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less. The golf cart must be insured, registered, and excise taxes paid.

If you are using the golf cart on your favorite 18-hole course or in a campground, the cart does not have to be registered. However, many Maine campground owners are requiring their patrons with golf carts show proof of insurance for the vehicle. Be sure to check with the campground, prior to your stay, on what their rules are about golf carts on their property.

If you plan on using your golf cart on one of Maine’s many islands, you should check with the local governmental authorities regarding their specific requirements.

Who doesn’t love to cuddle with their favorite canine fur baby. There’s nothing like seeing that special bond between an owner and their dog. But there’s one place where that bond could be a cause for concern – in the lap of the driver while operating a motor vehicle. Currently, the state of New Hampshire has legislation in the works to ban animals from the driver’s seat. This form of distracted driving can endanger others. A NH legislator witnessed a distracted driver patting a dog on their lap, unaware of a child nearby. A child would have been seriously injured, if the child’s grandmother had not pulled the child to safety. Several other New England states have similar restrictions which may include restraining your dog with a dog’s car harness, dog seat belt, or crate. Please consider keeping Fido and the general public safe by keeping your dog out of the driver’s seat. If you are interested in knowing the Maine rule on this subject, please give our office a call. We are here to help with all your insurance related needs.
