Nobody discovers there was no estate plan during a calm afternoon conversation.

They find out at the hospital. Or at the kitchen table, three days after a funeral, when someone asks:

“So who actually owns the house?”

We've spent decades helping Missouri families protect their health, their income and their futures. And one gap we see left open again and again is the plan for what happens to everything you've worked to build.

Health insurance. Life insurance. Retirement savings. A home.

The accounts may be there. The coverage may be there. But are the beneficiary designations current? Is the house titled the way you intend? Does your overall plan actually match what you want to happen?

Without a clear plan, Missouri's inheritance and probate rules can determine what happens to assets that don't otherwise pass through a beneficiary designation, joint ownership, trust or another arrangement.

That's not a scare tactic. It's simply how the law works.

The good news?

This gap is fixable.

You don't have to wait for a crisis to have the conversation.

Have you had this conversation with your family yet?

Dental and vision benefits work differently from your major medical health plan — and unused benefits may not automatically carry forward.

For many plans, annual benefits or allowances reset at the end of the plan’s benefit year. But that date isn't always December 31, and some plans offer rollover features or have benefits that work differently. Check your specific plan before assuming your remaining benefits will disappear.

Your dental plan may have an annual maximum — the maximum amount the plan will pay toward covered dental services during a specified period. Some plans may also treat preventive services differently when calculating that maximum.

So before the year gets away from you, take a look at your remaining dental and vision benefits.

Have you scheduled that cleaning, dental exam, or eye exam you've been putting off?

Every Missouri family's situation is different. The right dental or vision coverage isn't necessarily the plan with the lowest monthly premium — it's the plan that makes sense for how your family actually uses care.

When did you last check your remaining benefits for the year?

If you’re turning 65 in the next year — or your parent or spouse is — there’s one Medicare deadline you really don’t want to miss.

For most people, Medicare’s Initial Enrollment Period gives you 7 months to enroll: it starts 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.

Miss that window without qualifying coverage, and you may have to wait for another enrollment period — and you could face a late enrollment penalty.

Adult children: you’re often the ones helping a parent keep track of these deadlines. This post is for you too.

Still working and covered by an employer plan at 65? You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period for Part B. In many cases, Medicare will need information confirming your employer health coverage. CMS Form L-564 can be used to provide that employment and coverage information. If your employer can’t complete the form, Medicare says you may be able to provide other proof of job-based coverage.

Here’s what a missed Part B enrollment window can potentially mean:

→ You may have to wait for the General Enrollment Period, which runs January 1 through March 31.

→ You may pay a 10% Part B late enrollment penalty for each full 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn’t enroll, unless you qualify for an exception.

→ That penalty is generally added to your monthly Part B premium for as long as you have Part B.

For 2026, the standard Part B premium is $202.90 per month. A two-year delay without qualifying coverage could mean a 20% late enrollment penalty — an additional $40.58 per month based on the 2026 standard premium.

Every situation is different. Employer coverage, disability status, when you qualify for Medicare, and other circumstances can affect which enrollment period applies to you.

Missouri families considering Medicare Advantage deserve to understand not just the monthly premium, but how their plan handles care when they need it most.

One important factor to understand is prior authorization. Medicare Advantage plans may require approval before covering certain services, including some types of post-acute care. The specific requirements vary by plan.

A 2025 survey of 363 nursing home providers found that 66% experienced Medicare Advantage denials or delays for medically necessary post-acute care either daily (29%) or weekly (37%).

And 67% said they had encountered a situation where an MA plan pulled skilled nursing coverage prematurely against the advice of the resident’s healthcare provider.

Then came an important 2026 finding from the HHS Office of Inspector General.

Among the Medicare Advantage organizations reviewed, 12% of skilled nursing facility admission requests were denied. Only 18% of those denials were appealed—but when they were appealed, 95% were overturned. OIG said the high overturn rate raises concerns about whether some initial denials were appropriate.

That doesn't mean Medicare Advantage is the wrong choice. For many people, it can be a good fit. But choosing a plan shouldn't be based on premium alone.

Before enrolling, consider the bigger picture: What doctors and hospitals are in the network? What services require prior authorization? What will you pay when you actually need care?

If you or someone you love is approaching Medicare eligibility in Missouri, getting personalized guidance can help you compare your options with a clearer understanding of both the costs and coverage rules.

Most people think trusts are for millionaires. They're wrong.

If you own a home in Washington, Missouri, a basic revocable trust can keep that home out of probate court entirely — meaning your family gets it faster, cheaper, and without a judge involved.

Think about it: you name yourself as trustee while you're alive, then name who takes over when you're not. Your house, your rules, your people.

This isn't complicated. It's just a plan most families never knew they needed.

He had travel insurance. His son needed emergency care abroad. The bill hit $147,000.

The claim was denied anyway.

This happened in June 2026 — and it went viral because most people assumed having a policy meant being covered.

It doesn't. The fine print decides.

Three things that quietly kill claims: a pre-existing condition clause, a "not medically necessary" ruling, or using a provider outside the plan's network.

Before your next trip, ask one question: what specifically will get my claim denied?

If you can't answer that, you don't fully own your coverage yet.

After years in this business, I've seen what happens when a trip goes wrong and the policy doesn't do what people expected.

A story went viral last month. A man's son faced a $147,000 claim denial — despite having travel insurance. It wasn't fraud. It was a gap nobody warned him about.

Three things I tell every client before they buy: Check the pre-existing condition clause. Confirm your medical evacuation limit. Ask specifically about cancel-for-any-reason coverage.

Most people skip all three. Then they find out the hard way.

Did you read the fine print on your last travel policy?

"What's the difference between fixed and indexed annuities — and which one is right for me?"

I get that question every week from Washington, Missouri retirees. And most people asking it have been talked at in jargon until their eyes glaze over. So here's my straight answer.

A fixed annuity locks in a guaranteed rate. Done. No surprises. Right now the best nationally available rates on 10-year terms are hitting 7.65% from select carriers — A-rated insurers are running 5.00% to 5.65% depending on term. Either way, that's real money working predictably for you.

A fixed indexed annuity ties your growth potential to a market index, but protects your principal from losses. You don't get the full market upside, but you never lose ground when markets drop.

Neither is universally better. One rewards certainty. The other rewards patience with protection.

The right choice depends on your timeline, your income needs, and how well you sleep when markets get noisy.

Which of those sounds more like you?

One of the first surprises retirees hit — usually sitting in the dentist's chair — is that Medicare doesn't cover what they assumed it would.

As of right now, Original Medicare still excludes dental and vision. Full stop. And some Medicare Advantage plans have quietly narrowed their dental benefits down to preventive care only — a change that hit Washington, Missouri and Franklin County seniors harder than the marketing suggested it would.

That frustration is valid. You paid in for decades and still get a gap nobody warned you about.

Here's what we tell our clients: standalone dental and vision coverage exists, and some vision plans start around $12 a month. It's not complicated. It just takes someone actually walking you through it.

Are you confident your current coverage handles dental and vision — or are you just hoping it does?
