Thinking about retiring abroad? Try it before you commit. Rent for a few months, visit in the hard season, run the everyday errands like a clinic visit and a bank stop, and keep your U.S. options open until the trial ends.

Rent first, decide second.

Where would you spend your trial stay?

Four estate planning myths cost families time and money.

"I'm not wealthy enough."

"My will covers everything."

"My kids will sort it out."

"It's for when I'm old."

Beneficiary designations on retirement accounts and life insurance generally override your will, so the names on file matter more than most people think.

When did you last check yours?

Every flight starts with: put your own mask on first. Most of us do the reverse with our money. Our jobs, kids, spouses, and parents get our best hours. Our own future gets what is left.

Planning ahead is love in advance. Take one day this quarter to check your beneficiaries, your documents, and your coverage.

When will your day be?

Nobody builds a retirement plan for someone else's life.

I've sat with clients who described a retirement that looked a lot like someone else's: a magazine cover, a friend's plan, a parent's version of "set for life." It's a fine starting picture. It's not a plan.

Build yours for the one you're actually living. That means your own number, your own timeline, your own mix of guaranteed income and market risk, built around what your life actually looks like, not somebody else's highlight reel.

If you've been planning around someone else's picture, that's exactly where we start.

Federal employee? Here's what happens to your FEHB when you retire: you generally need 5 years of enrollment to keep it, your share of the premium comes out of your annuity check instead of your paycheck, Medicare coordination matters at 65, and your spouse only keeps coverage if you elected a survivor annuity.

Do you know your FEHB number, or just assumed it carries over automatically?

Retiring abroad? Your Social Security, pension, or TSP check still arrives in US dollars, but the exchange rate decides what those dollars actually buy where you live. Today's rate isn't guaranteed to last.

Keeping a local-currency cushion and reviewing your plan every year can keep a bad exchange-rate stretch from forcing a rushed decision.

Have you planned for a weak-dollar year, or just a good one?

Annuities get a worse reputation than they've earned. Here are four myths I hear constantly, and what's actually true.

Myth: Your money is locked away forever.
Truth: Most contracts allow penalty-free withdrawals each year. Terms vary by contract, so "forever" is rarely accurate.

Myth: They're only for people who don't understand investing.
Truth: Plenty of buyers already have market exposure elsewhere and add an annuity specifically for guaranteed lifetime income.

Myth: The fees eat everything.
Truth: Costs vary by contract type and rider. Read the actual numbers on your contract before assuming the worst case.

Myth: Die early, and the insurance company keeps it all.
Truth: Many contracts include death benefit or period-certain provisions that pass remaining value to a beneficiary. It depends on the contract.

An annuity isn't right for everyone, and it isn't wrong for everyone either. Every contract is different. Let's talk about yours.

47% of Americans earn money from a side hustle now, and the median brings in over $2,000 a month. Real income.

But 48% of Americans have no plan for what happens to their digital accounts when they die. No named contact, no instructions, no plan for the income.

Swipe through, then ask: if something happened to you tomorrow, does anyone know how to keep your online income running?

The Retirement Prompt Lab, No. 16. No pitch, just free game.

"I want to retire two years early" sounds simple until you run the actual numbers. A smaller nest egg. Less time compounding. Sometimes a smaller pension or Social Security check for the rest of your life, because you claimed early.

Copy this, paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, and fill in your own brackets:

Act as a retirement income educator. Help me stress-test an earlier retirement date.
My planned retirement age: [AGE].
The earlier age I'm considering: [AGE MINUS 2].
My retirement savings today: [$].
My monthly contribution: [$].
Expected monthly pension or Social Security at each age: [$ AT PLANNED AGE] vs [$ AT EARLIER AGE].
My expected monthly spending: [$].

Tell me: (1) roughly how much smaller my savings would be at the earlier date, (2) how claiming earlier affects my guaranteed monthly income for life, (3) how many more years my savings would need to last, and (4) three questions to bring to a licensed professional before I lock in the earlier date.

AI isn't a licensed advisor and doesn't replace a conversation with a licensed professional. Bring the output to one before you make any decisions.

Save this before you circle a new date.

A while back, a client of mine watched 30% of her retirement portfolio disappear during the last downturn. She worked three more years to rebuild it, finally retired, and then realized no one had ever taught her how to draw the money down. Her words stuck with me: most of us were taught to save, almost no one teaches you how to spend it.

Do you have a plan for turning your savings into income, or just a plan for saving?
