The TapIt Metro DC smartphone app readily offers users GPS listings of and directions to bottle refill locations, their hours of operation, and their contact information to help users explore all of the great sites and establishments our region has to offer. There’s no doubt that visitors and natives alike will be out in huge numbers in the coming months, thirsty,

and looking for water. In fact, spring and summer months are credited with drawing an estimated 20 million visitors and $2.15 billion in revenue to the DC Metro Region. The free TapIt program is the perfect tool to assist business owners in accessing this lucrative tourist market and to help our region’s thirsty denizens find free tap water. Did you know that it takes 2000 times the amount of energy to produce and distribute bottled water as it does tap? The United States consumes 33 billion liters of bottled water annually which requires approximately 43 million barrels of oil; that’s enough oil to cover every square inch of Metro track 30 times over! With almost 80% of plastic bottles ending up in landfills, the TapIt program mediates this waste by giving the public a more regulated and sustainable alternative to bottled water. In addition to preserving environmental integrity, TapIt Metro DC benefits both the public and businesses: the public keeps hydrated and saves money while businesses enjoy increased foot traffic, multi-platform advertising and promotion, and recognition of eco-friendly business practices for absolutely no cost.

“Water can be taken for granted—you turn on the tap, and it’s always there. I’ve gained a huge appreciation for water during my time at COG; conveying its value is important for the whole habitat.”

It’s ! If you enjoy spending time on the Chesapeake Bay (and who doesn’t?), remember to keep our Bay clean by always disposing of your trash and fishing line properly, and by never dumping it in our waterways. Next time you’re at the water, you can help keep the Bay clean by picking up trash whenever you see it!
