What should I do about Medicare when I retire? It’s the #1 question I get from federal employees, and the answer is often buried under a mountain of myths. If you are a federal retiree, doing nothing might be the most expensive choice you make.
Let’s clear the air:
Myth: Part B is too expensive.
Fact: While the standard premium is $202.90, the savings often outweigh the cost. Plans like BCBS Basic provide an $800/year rebate, and Aetna Direct offers $900. When Medicare is primary, many plans waive deductibles and copays entirely.
Myth: I won’t be able to see my doctor.
Fact: 98% of non-pediatric physicians participate in Medicare. Access is often reported to be equal to or better than private insurance!
Myth: I’m healthy, I don’t need it yet.
Fact: It’s pay me now or pay me later. Medicare offers much more generous home health and therapy coverage than standard FEHB plans. Plus, waiting usually triggers a 10% permanent late penalty.
Myth: Part D isn't for feds.
Fact: New FEHB Part D plans include a $2,100 annual out-of-pocket cap on prescriptions.
Are you feeling a little off-balance with your retirement strategy? Don't guess( get the facts.)
