A note from one of our "60 for 60" partners, Connie Carter, realtor with Compass, continuing in Washingtonian's 60th anniversary series.

My husband teases me with a poster that read “most Kindergartners ask 300 questions a day” but in large black ink he added “Connie asks 1000”! I have always been a curious person: Lifelong learning, exploring the odd streets, collecting art, reimagining space, connecting with people, worldwide travel have been the consistent thread of my life. My broadcast journalism degree at Northwestern led me to ABC News 20/20, Burson Marsteller, founding Australian Great Estates wine import company, then Barbara Corcoran’s firm in NYC which began a 32-year career in residential real estate.

Returning to Washington, DC after years living overseas gave me an opportunity to explore my hometown city from the vantage point of a new arrival, which has always served me well working with buyers. I remember looking very hard to find the right place for my family, my own search that resulted in buying a mid-century modern house, rare for DC.

I try to employ that same leaving-no-stone-unturned approach to my work with luxury properties throughout the DC metro area, where I’ve spent the last 25 years. Giving back to my birthplace as a 10th generation Washingtonian has always been a high priority, currently Co-chairing the Phillips Collection Legacy Gifts and supporting the 11th Street Bridge Park (breaking ground Spring 2026).

I am so grateful for my profession because it’s a perfect intersection of my passion for art, architecture, sense of place, business, and the interpersonal relationships with each of my clients. I am very fortunate to call many of my clients now close personal friends, something I am most proud of. From my own distinctive homes—including a historic 1768 property “Pot House” in Middleburg Virginia—I understand the appeal of unique properties. It is a career that has allowed me to pose the right “1000 questions” to find their perfect home or negotiate their best deal. https://conniecarterdc.com

If you want a rollicking night of theater head to Arena stage in Washington DC to see “Fake it till you make it“. Starring who is marvelous in the farcical melange of mistaken identity. She redefines“coming out” super cast, lots to discuss.

I found this charming watercolor at the Iron city Fishing Club Art show The Archipelago, Canada. It’s taking me a little while to find the right frame, but I absolutely love this swirly dotted copper picking up the dreamy sunlight. The charm doesn’t really translate in this photo, but it’s a magical scene. I just love it. Thank you for your splendid work.

I am back to work after fun ski week away. Today I learned Gordon snapped this photo and unbeknownst to me sent to my Mom. We were in the car, she said “ Gordon sent the cutest photo of you” adding he said “I love my bride”. I couldn’t stop grinning. So here is the shot, his sentiment made me smile.
