VIEW: While expected, the speed of this announcement is, nonetheless, surprising. The Biden administration is wasting little time emphasizing the focus on the ESG and climate issue, especially with the expected Infrastructure Bill emerging this week. This is a dramatic step and a dramatic departure from the previous regime. The ramifications for what companies determine are "material" (which is what is required to be reported in SEC filings) is critical - and costly. It is almost impossible to overstate the effects that such requirements might have on listed entities and, given the US preeminence in corporate regulation, any changes could have a significant spill-over impact on regulations and listing standards abroad.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has launched a new page on its website that brings together the latest agency initiatives on environmental, social and governance issues, including climate change.
