What happens if Social Security says you were overpaid?

NARSSA’s Martha Shedden spoke with CBS News about why Social Security overpayments can happen and what beneficiaries should know if they receive an overpayment notice.

Shedden explains that beneficiaries have the right to challenge both the existence and amount of an overpayment and stresses the importance of acting quickly and keeping thorough records.

Ray R Harris, RSSA shares additional steps beneficiaries can take to better understand an overpayment determination, including requesting a complete accounting and benefit history from the Social Security Administration.

The agency told a woman that she has 30 days to pay it back. Otherwise, it would cut her benefits by 50% while it collects what it overpaid.

NARSSA’s latest survey findings are featured in Fortune.

After surveying Registered Social Security Analysts®, NARSSA found that 73.5% of respondents say their clients want to claim Social Security early because they fear future benefit cuts. Fortune spoke with NARSSA President and Co-Founder Martha Shedden about what RSSAs are seeing firsthand and the importance of education in helping individuals make informed Social Security claiming decisions.

As Martha shared, “The critical thing is for individuals to plan, not to panic.”

Thank you to Nick Lichtenberg at Fortune for highlighting these important findings and helping bring greater attention to the Social Security decisions Americans are facing.
