I haven’t always had the opportunity to make direct contributions on Giving Tuesday, but this year I wanted to thoughtfully make donations on behalf of to an organization that aligns with our values in each area where we conduct business. ✨

In Oakland, I chose , a grassroots group of folks feeding our community and providing mutual aid supplies for our houseless neighbors. I don’t need to tell you that it’s getting colder and wetter outside and supplies are in definite need. Please check them out! ❤️

In San Francisco, I have chosen my forever favorite non-profit, . These folks are on the ground daily helping youth experiencing homelessness and providing real love and care. They also run the SF Needle Exchange, distributing harm reduction supplies, including Narcan. ❤️

Since I now live in a rural town in the California Delta, I wanted to support an organization near my home. I have come across the work of , which is a youth-led organization educating their suburban town about social justice issues through The Reclamation Project. supports these efforts! ❤️

Finally, I have been doing research and my home and office is on Plains Miwok land here in unincorporated Sacramento County. I have been following the Facebook of the California Valley Miwok Tribe and I will be mailing them a check today to support their efforts. ❤️

I hope you will thoughtfully consider donating to one of these organizations or another group that you believe in. ✨

Although I could not make monetary donations to everyone, I would also like to suggest donating to .oakland.punks.with.lunch, .punks.with.lunch, , , , .co.op, , (who I will be paying my Shumi land tax to in January). These are all organizations that align deeply with our values and I encourage you to give them your support. ❤️

Client Spotlight: Mr. D’s Music Club 🎶

Mr. D's Music Club has been hosting summer camps and after school programs here in Oakland for the past 10 years. They did an amazing pivot last year and offered programs online; however, this year they have returned with safe, in person camps that focus on all aspects of the performing arts. 🎭 Music, drama, dance, visual art, and fun performances are all part of the camp week & they are currently enrolling for their next round of camp, starting July 12th! 💥

I started working with both Stephen (Mr. D!) and Hailey last summer and I just love supporting their business. ❤️ I have worked to clean up their books, prepare them for tax time, and assisted them with payroll and other compliance issues. 💰 They are such passionate people and they have worked extra hard this year to provide a camp for kids that is fun, safe, and even a little bit goofy!! 🙃 I hope you’ll check them out and send any curious and creative 8-12 year olds their way! 🎉

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for a super rewarding first tax season for ! 🤩

I had the honor of taking care of the bookkeeping and preliminary tax prep for a dozen small businesses & non-profits this year, with a couple more still on extension. 🥳

I hope I’ll have more time in the coming months to introduce you to these cool folks and also to tell you more about the way I operate. It’s a collaborative process and each client has access to “real world” consulting from me, in addition to bookkeeping. 👩🏻‍🏫

I love my work and I care deeply about my clients and their success. Thank you for your trust. ❤️

Swinging into this week with all the good vibes ✨

🚨 A friendly reminder that individual income tax returns are due in one week on Monday, May 17th. This includes sole proprietors who report income/expenses on Schedule C with Form 1040.

😩 If you aren’t ready, don’t despair. You can file Form 4868 to apply for an extension. You can even print this out and mail it in yourself.

💰Unfortunately the extension does not extend the date that any payments are due, so be sure to make any estimated tax payments necessary when you file. You can pay online or send a check with your extension. You definitely want to avoid penalties and interest on this, trust me, I’ve actually had to do that and it was not fun. So get a payment in if you can.

🤢 Finally, I’d like to take a moment to say that it’s okay if you have done nothing yet on your 2020 taxes, if this is scary to you, or if even thinking of taxes makes you ill. You are not alone. Together we will get through this. And just remember that extension is there to help you, so take advantage of it!

♥️ It’s Monday and I’m feeling a good week coming on! I hope you are too! You’ve got this. And if you need help, I’m here.

Have y’all heard about the Golden State Stimulus? Folks keep asking me about it, so I thought I’d break it down for you. ☀️

This is a payment meant to help out low-income Californians, and also those who may not have been eligible for federal stimulus (like those without a social security number). ❤️

The one time payment of $600 or $1200 (amount is dependent upon several factors) will be made automatically once your state return is filed and processed. Most people should receive their stimulus in 30-45 days via check or electronic funds transfer. 👏

Like everything, there are rules about & exceptions to who will receive this stimulus, but in a nutshell, you could qualify if:

- you received the California Earned Income Tax Credit (and the biggest qualifying point for this is CA taxable income of less than $30,000)
OR
- you filed taxes with an ITIN (individual taxpayer identification number) and had less than $75,000 CA income
Also:
- you need to have lived in CA more than half of 2020 and will need to live in state when payment is received
And
- you cannot be claimed as a dependent

That’s the DL. Get those tax returns wrapped up if you qualify for this cash! 💰

This was me on April 15th six years ago after staying up all night to wrap up my bookkeeping in order to file my taxes at the last minute. 😱 I don’t recommend this method (but I do recommend visiting the roof of SFAI when you need to seriously chill!)

Luckily, the deadline for individual return filings has been extended until May 17th, so you won’t be in the same position I was...today. 😬 Please get in touch if you still need help wrapping up 2020. No judgement here, I’ve literally been in the exact same position! ☺️

So what do you need to be thinking about TODAY, April 15, 2021⁉️

- if you are an LLC or C-Corp, make sure you pay your annual filing fee
- if you file as a corporation, your deadline was not extended, so file an extension if needed
- if you are self-employed, make sure to do a federal and state estimated payment, if required

Best of luck folks. You’ve got this. ❤️

Happy Friday y’all. ☀️ New home office is coming together. 🌵Have a lovely weekend! ❤️

Client Spotlight: Julia Simone Fogelson Psychotherapy ✨

Julia (she/her/hers) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who lives in Oakland. She provides psychotherapy sessions remotely and also has an office in Albany. 🪴

Some cool things about Julia:
- She got her advanced degree from , an east coast women’s college & continues to take coursework , which focuses on holistic and alternative modalities 💫
- She’s knowledgeable about poly/kink/sex-positive lifestyles; she’s q***r- & gender-affirming; and she is a weight-neutral provider 🌟
- And finally, she is respectful of Ohlone territory and pays her land tax monthly to ✊

So yeah, basically your dream therapist. 🥰 Hit her up at juliapsychotherapy.com. Another admirable trait of Julia’s? She doesn’t do social media. Really. So find her IRL! 😱

Julia and I found each other on Nextdoor right as I was starting . She was in her first year of business and needed assistance setting up an accounting system and compiling financial reports for tax filing. We streamlined some systems and spent time reviewing questions about business best practices, which Julia has implemented. I love working with new small business owners, especially ones with similar values. 👊

Now that I have completed her 2020 books, I’m working with Julia to keep everything up to date as we move through 2021. It’s especially empowering to know where you stand as you go and it’s my goal to prepare my clients to make the best financial decisions possible. 💵 ♥️

🚨 BORING POST ALERT!! 🤣

There are a couple of tax filings due this week. If you are a business owner, read on. 👀 If not, perhaps you’d like to continue so you know what all the small biz folks have to deal with on the regular 😱

Okay! Here’s the deal:

1. 1099-MISC e-filings to the IRS are due this Wednesday, March 31st. This is different than the 1099-NEC (non-employee compensation) filings that were due earlier this year and includes things like awards & grants and any “other income” that you disbursed. ✨Remember that $600 is the golden number for 1099s. Anything you paid out at that amount or above MAY be subject to 1099 requirements. There are exceptions, so make sure you’re up on what’s necessary for your filings.

2. Form BOE-571-L for Business Personal Property tax is due Thursday, April 1st in Alameda County. What’s that, you ask?! Well, if you’ve ever gotten a letter in the mail from Henry C. Levy, Treasurer & Tax Collector for Alameda County, you’ll know. 😬 In a complete nutshell, you’re required to file IF your biz has at least 100K in assets w/ exceptions (this includes many restaurant folks) OR if you get a random notice in the mail (this happened to me once 🙄). Also, you should know that the form is “due” April 1st but isn’t considered “delinquent” until after May 7th. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not sure about that but thanks for the extra time, Alameda County! 🙂

If I work with you as your bookkeeper, I keep you informed on the tax deadlines for your particular situation (hello sales & use tax, payroll tax, self employment tax, state & federal tax, local city tax, and on and on....) and I help you prepare to file. 👊

As a former retail store owner, I know what a drag it can be to keep track of all this stuff. 😩 I get it and I’m on your side. I’m actually working right now with one client on 1099-MISC filings and helping another out with the preparation for their BPP filing. ☺️

Have a nice week and let me know if I can be of any assistance. ❤️

Client Spotlight: Oakland Indie Alliance ✨

The Oakland Indie Alliance is a non-profit organization that provides resources to and advocates for Oakland’s small business community. OIA gives voice to the needs and concerns of our local businesses and provides a vast network of support for the individual business owner. I encourage you to join if you are not already a member (there is no charge for membership)! 👊

These are the folks behind the .town and pages. Follow them there to see all of their cool members and check out the ways you can support their local campaigns! 💥

I worked with OIA to take care of their bookkeeping for 2019 and 2020, and now do monthly maintenance and special projects. I love supporting the Oakland small business community through this work and I hope you will check them out. ❤️
