It’s a question many families face during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

The answer: Original Medicare does not cover long-term stays in a nursing home for custodial care, like help with bathing, dressing, or eating.

It only covers short-term skilled nursing care after a qualifying hospital stay (up to 100 days), and even then, certain conditions must be met.

This can come as a shock to caregivers and loved ones already navigating difficult decisions.

Understanding what Medicare does and doesn’t cover can make all the difference in planning ahead with confidence and care.

Medicare: A federal program for people 65+ or with certain disabilities, regardless of income.

Medicaid: A state + federal program for people of any age with low income.

While both can help cover medical expenses, there are key differences in how individuals can qualify for these benefits.

One is about age/disability, the other about income.

If you need help navigating Medicare, we're here to help.

Medicare covers everything, right? Not exactly. It is a common misconception that Medicare eliminates all healthcare costs.

The truth is:
Original Medicare does not cover everything. In fact, it does not include:
• Dental care
• Hearing aids
• Routine vision exams for glasses
• Long-term custodial care
• Most prescription drugs (unless you have Part D coverage)

Without the right supplemental plan, these gaps can lead to unexpected expenses.
We help individuals understand what Medicare includes, what it does not, and what coverage makes the most sense for their needs and lifestyle.

Here’s what to know before you pack your bags:

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) typically does not cover medical care outside the U.S.
If you need emergency treatment while traveling internationally, you’ll likely be responsible for the full cost.

There are some rare exceptions, such as:
– You're in the U.S. when a medical emergency occurs, but a foreign hospital is closer
– You're traveling through Canada between Alaska and another state
– You’re on a cruise and the ship is within 6 hours of a U.S. port

Want coverage while abroad? Some Medigap plans (like Plan G or Plan N) offer limited foreign emergency coverage. You can also purchase separate travel insurance designed for international care.

Before you go, check your Medicare plan’s rules or talk to a benefits advisor.

Turning 65 opens the door to Medicare eligibility, but if you are still working, you have important choices to make about your health insurance.

If you have group health coverage through your employer or your spouse’s employer, you might be able to delay enrolling in certain parts of Medicare without facing penalties. Many choose to keep their employer coverage and enroll in Medicare Part A, which is usually premium-free.

Making the right choice can help protect you from late enrollment penalties and ensure you have continuous coverage when you retire.

Before making any changes, talk to your HR department and review your Medicare options. A little planning now can save you a lot of headaches later.

Work today. Plan for tomorrow. Protect your health every step of the way.

Medicare isn’t just Parts A, B, C and D. It’s a whole ecosystem of acronyms, and some of the most impactful ones often go unnoticed.

Here are four lesser-known Medicare acronyms worth knowing:

MAC (Medicare Administrative Contractor): These regional contractors handle claims processing, compliance and payments, ensuring the Medicare system runs smoothly nationwide.

MIPPA (Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act): Enacted in 2008, MIPPA expanded access to preventive care, enhanced rural healthcare delivery and improved outreach for low-income assistance programs.

LIS (Low-Income Subsidy, also called Extra Help): This program helps individuals with limited income by covering some or all of their Medicare Part D costs, including premiums, deductibles and copays.

SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program): A free, state-level resource offering personalized Medicare counseling to help beneficiaries navigate their options with clarity and confidence.

These aren’t just acronyms. They’re essential components of a healthcare system striving to be more equitable, accessible and efficient.

Myth: “I can sign up for Medicare whenever I want.”
TRUTH: TIMING MATTERS. A LOT.

Medicare has specific enrollment windows and missing them can lead to late penalties or gaps in coverage. Here’s what you need to know.

Let’s set the record straight: Not everyone is auto-enrolled into Medicare. This is one of the most common (and costly) misconceptions about Medicare, and it can lead to missed deadlines, gaps in coverage and long-term penalties.

Here’s the truth:
If you're already receiving Social Security benefits before you turn 65, then yes, you’ll likely be auto-enrolled in Parts A & B.

But if you're not receiving Social Security yet? You’ll need to enroll yourself during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which starts three months before your 65th birthday.

Missing that window could mean:
– A delay in coverage
– A late enrollment penalty that lasts for life
– A whole lot of stress that could’ve been avoided with the right information

Whether you’re approaching 65, supporting a loved one or work in a space where you guide others, these details matter.

If you're transitioning to Medicare, you might be wondering:
"What happens to my spouse and kids who were covered under my health insurance?"

Medicare doesn’t cover dependents. Unlike many employer-sponsored health plans, Medicare is individual coverage only. That means your spouse and children won’t be automatically covered under your Medicare plan. Swipe to learn more!
