October is Financial Planning Month.

A retirement plan shouldn't be built around just your investments.

Income, taxes, healthcare, long-term care, investments, and your estate can all impact one another — which is why we believe they should be planned together.

At Carver County Retirement, our planning process focuses on six key areas:

• Retirement Income Planning
• Investment Management
• Tax Planning
• Healthcare Planning
• Long-Term Care Planning
• Estate & Legacy Planning

Retirement comes with a lot of moving pieces. Having a coordinated plan can help you understand how they all fit together.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month.

Life insurance can be about much more than simply leaving a death benefit.

When properly incorporated into a financial plan, it can help:

• Protect your family's financial future
• Replace lost income
• Provide liquidity for your estate
• Create a legacy for the next generation
• Support certain long-term retirement planning strategies

The important question isn't simply, "Do I have life insurance?"

It's whether the coverage you have still aligns with the plan you've built today.

If it's been a while since you've reviewed your coverage, September is a great time to take another look.

Today, we remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families forever impacted, and the first responders who showed extraordinary courage.

We will never forget.

Managing your own investments has never been easier. Managing them through an entire retirement is a different challenge.

Asset allocation, diversification, taxes, withdrawal strategy, sequence-of-returns risk, and emotion can all affect the outcome.

The question isn't whether you can pick investments yourself. It's whether all of the pieces are working together toward the retirement you actually want.

Not all trusts do the same job.

Some trusts are designed to remain flexible. Others may be used for specific estate, tax, asset-protection, or legacy objectives.

The right structure depends on what you're trying to accomplish, who needs control, and how you want assets handled during your lifetime and after you're gone.

A trust should be selected because it solves a specific planning need—not simply because someone told you that you “need a trust.”

Retirement investing isn't only about the return you average. The order in which those returns occur can matter too.

That's sequence of returns risk.

A significant market decline early in retirement can be especially challenging when you're simultaneously withdrawing money from the portfolio. Selling investments during a downturn can leave fewer assets available to participate in a future recovery.

That's why retirement income planning may include strategies designed to create flexibility around where withdrawals come from during difficult markets.

Average returns tell only part of the story. In retirement, the timing of those returns matters too.

Checking your retirement accounts every day can make normal market movement feel much more important than it actually is.

A well-built retirement plan should be designed around long-term goals, income needs, and an appropriate level of risk—not today's account balance.

Markets will move. Headlines will change.

The better question is: Is your plan still doing the job it was designed to do?

Do you own a non-qualified annuity with significant taxable gains?

If you originally invested $200,000 and your annuity is now worth $350,000, that $150,000 gain is generally taxable as ordinary income when withdrawn.

But there may be another option.

Through a properly structured 1035 exchange, you may be able to reposition your existing annuity into a PPA-compliant annuity, where benefits used for qualified long-term care expenses may be received income-tax-free, subject to applicable tax rules.

For the right person, this can turn an existing annuity with substantial gains into a strategy designed to help address future long-term care costs.

Sometimes retirement planning isn’t about finding a new asset — it’s about finding a better use for the assets you already have.

If you’re approaching retirement and rarely hear from your financial advisor, it may be time to ask whether you’re getting the guidance you need.

There’s a big difference between simply having an advisor and having a proactive retirement planning team.

The right team stays connected, communicates consistently, and helps adjust your strategy as your life, the markets, tax laws, and your goals change.

Retirement is too important for a “set it and forget it” approach.

As you enter this next chapter, make sure you have a team that’s actively planning alongside you — not just managing your accounts.

If you’re looking for a more proactive approach to retirement planning, we’d love to start a conversation.
