Looks can be deceiving. As the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President states, “These boxers were born as women, grew up as women, have passports as a women, and fought for several years as women.” They had their victories last year overturned by the International Boxing Association, which is run by the Russians and funded by a Russian oil company as the sole sponsor. The IBA is now banned by the IOC because of many reasons, including lack of transparency.
These boxers also competed in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as women, and didn’t come close to medals, so nobody questioned their gender back then. It’s only now that they are winning—and last year, against Russian opponents.
Most Americans have never trusted Russia for fairness, but this story seemed to hit a nerve with many American concerned about trans competitors. Those concerns may be valid, but there is more to this story than initially meets the eye. Until proven otherwise, the IOC considers these two boxers are women.
Social Media was all over them and the IOC, and it does make us looks like Ugly Americans. Check out Logan Paul’s deleting of his tweet, and admission that he and others likely were unintentionally spreading misinformation.
Please take a pause, review facts from more than one source, and let’s wait to see how this actually turns out.
