Glassy Wing Sharp Shooter
Invasive Pest Alert 🚨

While Tulare County isn’t currently on the list of affected counties, please take a moment to review the risk assessment if you purchased any plant materials from a Costco in Northern California in the past month. The threat of this pest spreading can move quickly through our state if we don’t take necessary action to contain and restrict the movement of affected plant material.

May is Mental Health Awareness

Farm Bureau is hear to listen and lend an ear if you or someone you know needs to talk or access resources. Don’t suffer alone.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I keep thinking about the conversations I’ve had with farmers, the ones that start with ā€œI’m fineā€ but end with something much heavier.

The truth is, rural America is in a mental‑health crisis.
Psychiatrists, psychologists, or licensed clinical social workers are few and far between. Even when someone wants help, they may have to drive 50 miles or more to get it, and that’s if they can get off the farm at all.

Nonprofits are stepping up with education, suicide‑prevention training, and partnerships with land‑grant universities. But the need is bigger than any one organization.

Farmers carry a lot, weather, markets, livestock, land, legacy. And they carry it quietly.
This month, I hope we can make space for conversations that don’t come naturally in rural culture.
You don’t have to ā€œtough it out.ā€ You don’t have to handle everything alone.

Thank you to the Tulare County Workforce Investment Board for providing this opportunity to have agriculture’s voice amplified in our county’s workforce needs and honoring Tricia for her years of service.

Today at the Workforce Investment Board meeting, we had the honor of recognizing Tricia Stever-Blattler for her nearly 19 years of dedicated service to the WIB and to workforce development throughout Tulare County.

Throughout her tenure, Tricia provided strong leadership and advocacy for the agricultural industry while serving as a trusted liaison, collaborator, and resource on workforce issues impacting our region. Her contributions on the Board and its committees have strengthened partnerships, guided important initiatives, and advanced the WIB's mission in meaningful ways.

As Tricia prepares to conclude her time as Executive Director of the Tulare County Farm Bureau and begins a new chapter, we extend our deepest appreciation for the time, talent, and unwavering support she has shared with our organization over the years.

Thank you, Tricia, for your leadership, commitment, and partnership. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors and know your impact on Tulare County will continue to be felt for years to come.

Candidate forum coming up Tuesday May 12 for senate race.

State Senate candidates to speak at May 12 forum

The Sun-Gazette
VISALIA – In a state where inflation hits harder and the state budget is falling short, members of
both houses of the California Legislature play a vital role in how the San Joaquin Valley and the
state as whole collectively solve our biggest problems.

State Senators are one half of the bicameral body and, for Visalia area voters, one of the few
contested legislature races in this year’s Primary Election on June 2, 2026. Voters in State Senate

District 12 will have the opportunity to meet and question the candidates at a forum on May 12.
The forum will be at the Tulare County Office of Education, 6200 S. Mooney Blvd., in
Visalia. Doors open at 6 p.m. The forum will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There are three candidates running to replace Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield), who termed out
of the legislature after six years in the California Assembly and eight years in the State Senate.
The three candidates vying to represent District 12 on the California State Senate have all been
invited:
-Nathan Magsig, a Republican, and a Fresno County Supervisor from Clovis;
-William Brown, Jr., a Libertarian, and a social worker, and former Marine from Visalia;
-Louis Miramontes, a Republican, and an aircraft mechanic from Visalia.

The forum will give voters the chance to not only meet the candidates in person, but also to
submit questions from the audience.

If any candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the primary election, they will
immediately be elected to office starting with a new term in January 2027. If no candidate
garners more than 50% of the vote, the two candidates with the most votes will advance to a
runoff in the General Election on Nov. 4, 2026.

District 12 includes the unincorporated communities along the east side of the Valley stretching
from Auberry, California to the north and Lebec, California to the south. The cities represented
include Exeter, Clovis, Shafter, Taft, Maricopa, Tehachapi, Ridgecrest, California City, southern
Visalia, northern Fresno, and the western portion of Bakersfield.

The candidates have agreed to address questions directed to them by the sponsoring
organizations and accept prescreened questions from the audience.

Sponsors are:
-League of Women Voters of Tulare County
-American Association of University Women
-Valley Voice online newspaper.
-Tulare County League of Mexican American Women
-Sun-Gazette newspaper

The event will be streamed and posted online. Spanish language interpretation will be provided.
