Your Medicare premiums can change based on your income.

IRMAA is an income-based surcharge on Medicare Parts B and D, and because Medicare generally looks back two years at your income, decisions you make before year-end can affect what you pay for Medicare in 2028.

It’s one more reason tax planning and retirement planning should be looked at together.

Many people assume they’ll spend the same amount every year throughout retirement. In reality, spending often follows what’s known as the retirement spending smile.

Early in retirement, spending is often higher as you travel, pursue hobbies, and enjoy the freedom you’ve worked so hard for.

As retirement progresses, spending often declines as travel slows down and day-to-day expenses become more predictable.

Later in retirement, healthcare and long-term care costs can cause spending to rise again.

Understanding this pattern can help you build a more realistic retirement income plan instead of assuming your expenses will stay flat for 30 years.

We cover this concept and many others in our most popular YouTube video, Retirement Income Planning: How to Turn Your Savings Into a Paycheck.

Most people don’t know exactly how much they spend each month, and that’s okay.

Instead of building a budget from scratch, I often use a reverse budget. We start with your income, subtract taxes, savings, and payroll deductions, and what’s left is what you’re actually living on today.

One of the biggest retirement planning misconceptions is that you need to replace your working income dollar for dollar. In reality, you may no longer be paying payroll taxes, contributing to retirement accounts, or making a mortgage payment. Plus, income from sources like Social Security, pensions, and certain investment accounts may be taxed differently than a paycheck. That often means it takes less gross income to maintain the same lifestyle in retirement.

And yes… excuse the handwriting. 😅

Last night’s Hospice Soirée was a great reminder of what makes Martha’s Vineyard such a special place.

We spend a lot of time helping families navigate the financial side of losing a loved one, and seeing the support that Hospice & Palliative Care Of Martha’s Vineyard provides every day was incredibly meaningful.

Thank you to Farm Neck Golf Club for hosting such a wonderful evening, and thank you to everyone who helps make Hospice’s work possible. If you’re able, please consider supporting their mission.

Living on Martha’s Vineyard comes with some pretty unique financial challenges.

For a lot of people, their home makes them look wealthy on paper, but rising costs, seasonal income, property taxes, and estate planning concerns can make the day-to-day reality feel very different.

We put together a new video on some of the financial realities of living here and why planning on the Island often looks different than it does elsewhere.

This is for educational purposes only. See disclosures, YouTube, and blog post links in our bio.

Meet Charlie Porterfield, our financial planning intern this summer.

He grew up right here in Tisbury, went to the high school, played basketball and baseball, and now he’s heading into his junior year at UMass Amherst studying finance and environmental science. He reached out to local businesses last fall looking for a summer internship, we met over Thanksgiving, and it was a good fit from the start.

This summer he’s been running point on our community sponsorships (catch us at the MV Sharks game, the Amity Island 5K, and the Ag Fair), building out educational content for our YouTube channel, and putting together resources to help local nonprofits stretch every dollar they get.

When he’s not here, you’ll find him out on the water at the launch in Oak Bluffs or oyster farming, or at Lambert’s Cove if he’s off the clock completely.

Glad to have him on the team this summer. If you’re around the island, stop by and say hi.

What a weekend for the Island Autism 5K.

More than 250 people came together to run, walk, volunteer, and support an organization doing incredibly important work on Martha’s Vineyard. Together, the community raised $23,692 for Island Autism and helped make this the largest turnout in the race’s history.

We were proud to serve as presenting sponsor, but an event like this only happens because so many people step forward. Thank you to Casey O’Connor (Casey O'Connor), Lena Hanschka, and Joe Katusich and to Island Autism (Island Autism), the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism (Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism), and MV Running Company (MV Running Company) for bringing the entire day to life.

We are also grateful to Pocket Dogs and Mad Martha's Ice Cream for keeping everyone fed; to every sponsor, volunteer, runner, walker, and supporter who contributed; and to MV Times for covering the event and helping share its impact with the broader Island community.

This cause is deeply personal to our team. Grant’s son attends programming at Island Autism, and Grant’s experience running the 2023 Boston Marathon for the Flutie Foundation connected him with many families whose lives have been touched by autism.

Seeing the Island show up in this way meant more than we can adequately put into words. Thank you to everyone who was part of it.
