Leaving the Vineyard for the winter? A few things worth thinking about first.

Nor'easters can go from a quiet forecast to a major event in as little as 24 hours, much faster than a hurricane. And because we're an island, high winds don't just mean weather. Steamship Authority routinely cancels trips once high winds arrive, which can delay medical transport, building materials, contractors, and even groceries for days at a time.

A few things to have in place before you head out:
✅ A trusted caretaker (or a reliable neighbor/friend) who checks your property after every major storm, not just occasionally
✅ A clear, unobstructed path to your propane/oil tank, most providers won't deliver if it's snowed in or blocked
✅ Mini-splits protected from snow buildup so they keep functioning
✅ A clear plan with your provider: full heat maintained all winter, OR a professional full shutdown/drain, never a partial approach
