Don’t ignore the IRS!
Taxpayers who don’t file returns and owe taxes, or who file but don’t pay taxes on time are risking serious penalties. The IRS can seize assets if necessary.
If the IRS has been sending you letters because it found an error on your return or claims you owe back taxes, respond in writing — and don’t delay!

Don’t assume the IRS is correct in its assessment. Often times these letters are computer generated and further information can be provided to rectify the situation. At Stamos and Stamos we work with people routinely to rectify these situations.
The worst thing you can do is ignore the letters sent by the IRS. They will not go away.

Don’t ignore the IRS!
Recently I received a late-night call from a distant relative looking for advice. He was being audited and had set up a meeting with his preparer for the following day to discuss strategy. He asked if he should just ignore the audit and let them “come up with the adjustments.” He thought if they would get a pound of flesh from him they might “just leave him alone after.”

I explained that ignoring an audit is the worst thing one can do. The IRS will disallow all disputed deductions (and maybe a few they hadn’t originally disputed) and then possibly audit you additional years. What did I advise him to do? I told him to keep his meeting with his preparer and deliver a reasonable defense of his return.

Why “shopping for a refund” is a bad idea
Stamos and Stamos warn against “shopping for a refund.” Many times we take calls from taxpayers who are looking to find a preparer who promises to get you a bigger refund. The tax preparer who makes promises like that could be unscrupulous and lead you into deep trouble.
The goal of any ethical tax preparer should be for you to pay the least amount of taxes that are legally allowed. Many times we’ve seen were people have cut corners and lied on their returns at the suggestion of their preparers. Often times the same savings could be had through proper use of the law and planning.
