Today Woodmenlife had the pleasure of presenting a check to The Victor Valley Community Services Council in the amount of $13,400
This is 2 of 5 presentations in our High Desert!! How exciting is that??
Well, let me tell you, it’s super exciting to work for an organization that gives back to our communities.
Here is some history on the organization we choose to support:
They were organized in 1956 to meet the needs of the growing Victor Valley and High Desert Communities. At the same time the emerging needs included emergency welfare services for residents, relief services for transients, family counseling, health services, house numbering to provide an accurate response capability for emergencies, and the coordination of recreational activities. The Council established a thrift shop, Family Counseling Services, Christmas Baskets in continuation with The Salvation Army, and Senior Citizen's Club.
In the late 1950's the Council sponsored the Red Feather Limited Fund, now an independent organization known as Desert Communities United Way. A decade later the Volunteer Center was added to include, identify and meet additional community needs; this included the referral line and Phone Alert League. Other programs later organized included the High Desert Homeless Services, "A Better Way"(a domestic violence shelter prevention program), Community Resource Network Luncheon, Court Referral (Alternative Sentencing Program) and the Human Race Walk-a-thon.
Today we assist Senior Citizens and Disabled Adults with a variety of free programs including door to door transportation, minor home repairs, fall prevention services, chores, homemaker services, Assisted Group Shopping Trips, Senior Food Pantry Trips, Telephone Reassurance, Senior Activities, Luncheons, Friendly Visits and more.
