Property insurance policies are written based on how properties are occupied. If the occupancy changes, the policy must be updated accordingly. Some examples of occupancy types are as follows: primary residence, secondary residence, rental property, vacant, etc.
Insurance carriers can and will deny a claim and/or cancel the policy if a property ends up NOT being used or occupied correctly according to the policy. The reason for this is each policy type includes different coverage options; your information must be correct and coverage must be appropriate for the type and use of your property for your policy to be valid.
