Artificial intelligence has dominated the headlines lately. It feels eerily reminiscent of of the ma*****na stock and cryptocurrency craze of the recent past.

NVIDIA went up significantly over the last week. It announced strong forward guidance due to it designing the fastest and currently most in demand computer chips. These chips are currently being used for artificial intelligence.

The thing I find terrifying is that I think most people believe by implication that companies such as NVIDIA and Apple manufacture the computer chips they design. This is not true.

Taiwan Semi conductor which is located (coincidentally) in Taiwan, manufactures the computer chips for both companies. In fact TSMC is responsible for the manufacturing of 60% of the worlds computer chips and 90% of advanced chips.

Duplicating the manufacturing capabilities of TSMC most likely would be much more difficult than most anticipate.

Most experts believe China will try to take Taiwan by force or through subversive pressure within the next few years. It should be self evident this creates an existential risk to the very foundation of our security and economic foundation as it currently exist.

In addition I don’t think companies so dependent on the production of these chips will be worth much at all in the event of a Chinese takeover.

Everyone was silent during the takeover of Hong Kong recently. This could be inevitable.

Anything can happen in the next year or two but the risk to reward ratio is in the favor of investors over time. For those willing and able to take some risk, looking back years form now will most likely be happy they did.
