If you’re turning 65 soon and are unsure about what it means to enroll in Medicare, you are not alone.

One of the most common questions we hear from those nearing retirement is around the timeline for signing up for Medicare.

So, we wanted to share a few important reminders to help you stay on track:

✅Know your enrollment window. Your initial enrollment window lasts for seven months - three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and three months after your birthday. Enrolling early in this timeframe can help ensure your coverage begins right when you need it.

✅Understand how to sign up. Some individuals are automatically enrolled in Original Medicare, while others need to take action themselves to enroll in Original Medicare. This often depends on whether you are already receiving Social Security benefits.

✅Do not delay without a plan. Waiting too long to enroll without qualifying coverage can result in delayed coverage start dates and ongoing late-enrollment penalties.

✅Be aware of other options. If you are still working and covered under an employer plan, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period that can allow you to defer your enrollment.

However, missing all enrollment windows can limit your options and increase costs, so it's best to clarify this early.

Medicare decisions can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to navigate them alone.

Whether you are approaching 65 or are simply evaluating your options, contact us for guidance tailored to your situation.

“Start early.”

That's the lesson Mike Stapleton wishes he'd appreciated sooner.

He talks about teaching his children about compound interest, encouraging them to avoid unnecessary debt and making saving a priority as early as possible.

You don't need to have everything figured out today.

But the sooner you start, the more time your money has to work for you.

Having a healthcare proxy is important.

But Mike Stapleton makes an even more important point: the person you've chosen needs to know what you actually want.

If you're ever unable to speak for yourself, someone else may have to make incredibly difficult decisions on your behalf.

Have you talked with your family about:
• What kind of care you would want?
• What you would not want?
• Who should advocate for you?
• What matters most to you at the end of life?

These aren't always easy conversations, but they're important ones.

What does healthcare actually cost, and who pays for it?

In this conversation, Mike Stapleton, CEO of Thompson Health, explains one of the challenges facing healthcare providers today: the difference between what it costs to provide care and what hospitals are reimbursed by different payers.

Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance and self-pay patients can all reimburse providers differently. As Mike explains, Medicare may pay around 61 cents on the dollar compared with the cost of providing that care.

It’s a reminder that the healthcare system is more complicated than simply looking at your insurance premium or copay.

Understanding how healthcare works, and how those costs can affect you over time, is an important part of making informed financial decisions.

Long-term care can be one of the biggest financial challenges families face later in life.

And planning isn't simply about finding a nursing home when you need one.

Mike Stapleton explains why families need to think ahead about:
• Where they would want to receive care
• How that care would be paid for
• What assets may be available
• Long-term care insurance
• Medicaid planning
• And the availability of quality facilities

The earlier you have these conversations, the more options you may have.

When you need medical care, knowing where to go can make a difference.

Mike Stapleton, CEO of Thompson Health, explains why the goal should be getting the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

Primary care is often the most cost-effective starting point. Urgent care can handle many issues that don't require an emergency department. And when you're experiencing a true emergency, don't hesitate to call 911.

Understanding your options before you're sick can help you make better decisions when you need them most.
