We hear about it all the time, especially this time of year: GOALS.
How to set goals, how to achieve goals, 1-year goals, 5-year goals, 10-year goals…
It surrounds us from every angle. ‘Live your best life.' ‘Make this the best year yet!' etc.
But what happens when our goals don't line up with what the media says they should be?
Or, how about when we stray from the plan and miss our goals? One hiccup and we give up.
Well, it's time to change that!
Here are 6 tips to setting (and achieving) realistic goals:
1. Write them down! You are more likely to work towards them if you can consistently see them.
2. Consider your resources and potential barriers. Look at time, motivation, training, money, and support.
3. Reassess and recalibrate. Life happens; no path to your goals is straight and narrow. Instead of giving up, evaluate where things started to digress and adjust accordingly.
4. Set milestones. Break your big goal down into manageable steps or phases. And celebrate when you reach them!
5. Share your goals. Let others help cheer you on and hold you accountable.
6. Use the SMART approach. (S)pecific, (M)easurable, (A)ttainable, (R)elevant, (T)ime-sensitive.
And remember, there is no ‘best time' to set a goal, other than right now.

Myth: You should wait until you're closer to retirement to think about your estate plan.
Reality: Your 30s and 40s are actually the most critical decades for basic estate planning. Why? Because this is when you likely have young kids, a growing mortgage, and far less liquid wealth. If something happens to you, the stakes are incredibly high. I'm talking about guardianship designations for minor children. Powers of attorney if you're incapacitated. Basic beneficiary coordination so your 401k doesn't accidentally go to an ex or get tangled in probate for months while your family needs access to funds. The irony? People with $5 million at age 65 often have better default protections than people with $200K at age 38. But the family at 38 has more to lose in a crisis. Estate planning isn't about being morbid. It's about having a plan when you have the most to protect and the least margin for error. This myth persists because "estate planning" sounds like something only wealthy retirees need. But protecting your family isn't age or wealth dependent.

As a financial advisor myself, I know how important it is to find someone who truly understands your goals and values. If I were in your shoes, these are the questions I'd be asking:

🔹 How do you approach wealth planning?
I'd want to know if they take a holistic view—looking at investments, taxes planning strategies, insurance, estate planning strategies, and more.
🔹 What's your investment philosophy?
Do they prioritize long-term growth, income, or risk management? And does it align with my comfort level?
🔹 How are you compensated?
Transparency is key. I'd ask whether they're fee-only, commission-based, or a hybrid—and how that impacts their recommendations.
🔹 What kind of clients do you typically work with?
Experience matters. I'd want to know if they've helped people in similar life stages or professions.
🔹 How often will we communicate?
I'd look for someone who's proactive, responsive, and available when life changes or markets shift.
🔹 What credentials do you hold—and how do you stay current?
Holding certain designations can show commitment, but ongoing education and awareness of regulatory changes are just as important.

Asking the right questions helps you build a relationship based on trust, transparency, and shared values.

Curious how I answer these questions for my own clients? Let's connect—I'd love to share.
