🚨 SCAM ALERT: FAMILIES OF RECENTLY ARRESTED INDIVIDUALS ARE BEING TARGETED! 🚨

The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office is warning our community about a disturbing scam that has surfaced locally and is occurring in jurisdictions across the country.

Scammers are targeting the families and loved ones of individuals who have recently been arrested, pretending to be legitimate bail bondsmen in an attempt to steal hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars.

Unfortunately, this is not just happening somewhere else. Right here in Okeechobee County, one individual was recently scammed out of $15,000, money they may never see again.

HOW DOES THIS SCAM WORK?

When someone is arrested, certain arrest and incarceration information becomes public record. Scammers use these records, along with social media platforms, websites, and other online resources, to identify individuals who have recently been arrested.

From there, they research family connections, identifying spouses, parents, children, and other loved ones who may be willing to help secure someone's release from jail.

The scammer then contacts those family members, often by telephone, pretending to be a licensed bail bondsman or someone working on behalf of a legitimate bonding agency.

They may know the incarcerated person's full name, where they are being held, when they were arrested, and even details about their charges.

This information can make the call sound extremely convincing, but remember, much of this information is publicly available!

The scammer then creates a sense of urgency, telling the family that money must be paid immediately to secure the individual's release.

HERE IS WHERE THIS SCAM BECOMES EVEN MORE CONCERNING.

In one recent local case, a victim was deceived into believing they were paying a legitimate bail bondsman to secure a loved one's release. The victim was instructed to deliver $15,000 in cash, which was handed over in person.

The money disappeared, along with the individual who collected it, and the victim may never recover those funds.

Let that sink in for a moment.

This was not an electronic transfer, a suspicious internet link, or a gift card scam. Someone physically collected $15,000 from a person who believed they were helping a loved one get out of jail.

An in-person exchange does NOT make a transaction legitimate!

Scammers may arrange to meet victims in person, send someone to collect cash, request electronic transfers, or use other methods to obtain money.

HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY?

✅ Verify the bonding agency independently. Never rely solely on a telephone number provided by someone who contacts you. Look up the agency yourself and call its publicly listed business number.

✅ Contact the detention facility directly. Confirm that your loved one is actually incarcerated, ask about the established bond amount, and request information about legitimate bonding procedures.

✅ Verify the bondsman's license. In Florida, bail bond agents are licensed through the Florida Department of Financial Services. You can verify their credentials through the state's official licensing resources.

✅ Never hand over cash without proper verification. Do not meet someone at an unfamiliar location or hand over money simply because they claim to represent a bonding agency. Verify their identity, agency, and licensing first. Legitimate bail bond transactions require proper documentation and receipts.

✅ Never allow someone to pressure you into sending money immediately. Scammers rely on fear, confusion, and the natural desire to help a loved one.

✅ Be suspicious of unusual payment requests. Requests involving gift cards, cryptocurrency, personal payment app accounts, or cash delivered to an unidentified individual should raise immediate concerns.

✅ Do not trust caller ID. Telephone numbers can be spoofed to make a call appear to originate from a legitimate business or government agency.

✅ When in doubt, STOP! Take a moment, make independent telephone calls, and verify exactly who you are dealing with before transferring or handing over any money.

REMEMBER THIS IMPORTANT FACT:

Just because someone knows your loved one's name, arrest information, charges, or bond amount DOES NOT mean they are a legitimate bail bondsman.

That information may be available to anyone with internet access.

And just because someone is willing to meet you face-to-face does not mean they are who they claim to be.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE BEEN CONTACTED?

If you receive a suspicious call, do not provide personal or financial information. Hang up and independently contact the detention facility or a licensed bonding agency.

If you have already handed over or transferred money, immediately contact law enforcement. If a financial institution or payment service was involved, notify that provider immediately as well.

Preserve all telephone numbers, text messages, receipts, descriptions of individuals, meeting locations, and any other information that may assist investigators.

A FINAL WORD FROM YOUR SHERIFF'S OFFICE

We understand that learning a loved one has been arrested can be emotional, stressful, and overwhelming. Unfortunately, criminals recognize those emotions and are willing to exploit them for financial gain.

These scammers are not concerned about your family, your financial situation, or the hardship they leave behind. Their only interest is getting your money.

Please do not allow fear or urgency to override good judgment.

A few minutes spent verifying a telephone call or someone's identity could save you thousands of dollars.

And remember, if someone tells you that you must act immediately or risk your loved one remaining in jail, that is exactly when you need to slow down and verify the facts.

Help us protect our community by sharing this warning with your family, friends, and neighbors.
