According to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, flying debris is the greatest danger during a tornado, which is why what you keep in your safe room matters just as much as the room itself. Before severe weather season picks up, put together a small kit and store it in your designated safe space.

Your safe room kit should include:
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid supplies
• A battery powered or hand crank NOAA Weather Radio
• Copies of important documents, such as insurance information and identification
• A whistle to signal for help if needed
• Protective coverings such as a mattress, sleeping bag, or thick blankets, since flying debris is the greatest danger in a tornado
• Any medications or supplies needed for family members or pets

Put it together once, and it is ready whenever you need it. Save this post so your checklist is one less thing to think about when severe weather rolls in.
