Mark found the wild blackberries loaded around the back pond. This morning we picked them together for the first time in all our years — red bucket, two dogs, and a hundred thorns.
He took the dogs home, then surprised me by driving the Jeep across the pasture (no roads back there) to pick me up.
Now they’re boiling into jam.
The first surprise was the berries. The second was the man who came back for me.

Meet Ripley.

We walked into the county shelter with a name already picked out. Bailey. Decided before we’d even met the dog. Then a young man came out carrying the last three puppies, and before he’d taken two steps, Mark and I pointed at the same one and said it together: “that one.”

Turns out the officers who bring the puppies in get to name them. Our boy already had one. Ripley. It fit him better than the name we brought, so we kept it.

He’s quiet, calm, and wants nothing more than to be held. Belle could not be happier to have a new little buddy. The crate we set up lasted exactly one night before he claimed the bed.

Fifty-four rose bushes. Twenty-one varieties.

Months of pruning, watering, feeding, and waiting… for flowers that may only last a few days.

It seems like a poor bargain until the blooms return.

Then you remember that some of the most beautiful things in life aren’t valuable because they last. They’re valuable because they don’t.

I lost my precious Parmesan today. I’m heartbroken.

Meet Squiggy! Named after the character in Laverne & Shirley. We adopted her when she had to be rehomed and we kept her name. She is getting more affectionate every passing day!
