Is your vacation really paid for if it's sitting on a credit card?

Credit cards can be great tools. They offer convenience, fraud protection, and rewards. But they can also make it easy to spend more than planned because the financial impact doesn't show up until later.

Many people return from a wonderful vacation only to spend the next several months paying off the credit card balance.

Before booking your next trip, consider asking yourself:
✔️ Can I pay off the full balance when the statement arrives?
✔️ Do I know the total cost of this vacation, including meals, activities, and transportation?
✔️ Am I using rewards strategically, or am I spending more because rewards are available?

A vacation should create memories, not financial stress.

I recently wrote a short article about using credit cards wisely for travel and avoiding common pitfalls.

Read it here:

Have you ever returned from a trip and been surprised by how much you actually spent?

Recently, we met with a new client: a woman in her seventies who is going through a divorce while still actively involved in leading a non-profit organization. She has successfully managed organizations and budgets for many years.

At the same time, managing her own day-to-day finances had become overwhelming. Bills and invoices were not always being followed up on, checking account balances were not monitored closely enough, and monthly spending and cash flow had become unclear. Despite having substantial savings and investments, the practical side of managing finances had become stressful and difficult to keep up with.

During our meeting, she shared that she felt embarrassed about “being bad with money,” but also relieved that she had finally reached out for support.

This situation is far more common than many people realize!

There is still a stigma around getting help with personal finances. Many people assume that only those with serious financial problems need support. In reality, we often work with highly capable and successful individuals who simply need help keeping up with the ongoing day-to-day financial tasks, especially during major life transitions.

Nobody is good at everything, and nobody has to do everything alone: Sometimes, getting support early can prevent a great deal of stress, missed payments, and financial confusion later on.

Yesterday, we had the bittersweet task of saying goodbye to Andrea Young: Andrea has been an incredible part of our team at SDS Smart Daily Services LLC. Over the past two years, we have shared many hours of meaningful work and quite a few laughs along the way. As she and her family are moving out of state, it is time to say goodbye now.

Andrea, thank you for everything you have contributed. You will be truly missed by our team and our clients. Wishing you continued success and happiness in what’s ahead.

At the same time, I’m glad that Jeanné Phipps, who has already been working closely with Andrea, will be taking over most of her responsibilities and ensuring a smooth transition for our clients.

We’re so grateful for the time we had together. 💛

Last day of April, and this is the final post in my series on tax organization.

Today, I want to shift the focus to something that often has the biggest impact: documenting life changes.

There are many situations that can significantly affect finances and taxes, such as:
• Job changes or retirement
• Marriage or divorce
• Loss of a spouse
• Inheritance or gifts
• Buying or selling a home

In these situations, having clear documentation such as transaction records, final statements, and related documents can make a big difference later on.

It is far easier to save one document too many than to try to track it down afterward.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve shared simple ways to make tax season easier. If you’d like a quick summary, I’ve included the full “Ask the Expert” article in the comments.

So far, I’ve shared tips on tips on how to keep all tax documents in one place and how to prevent forgetting the smaller items

The next important step: don’t wait until tax season to look at everything.

Reviewing your records just once a year often means:
• Missing documents
• Unclear transactions
• More work under time pressure

The preferred alternative is to check in a few times during the year: twice a year, or ideally, quarterly.

This helps:
• Catch missing items early
• Keep things clear while details are still fresh
• Make tax season much easier

The goal is not to spend more time on finances, but to avoid the last-minute rush.

I’ve also shared more practical tips in a recent blog post:

Last week I shared a simple tip: keep all tax documents in one place.

This week: what often gets missed.

It’s usually not the big documents…
It’s the small ones:
• Donations
• Medical expenses
• Child care expenses
• Education costs
• Work-related purchases

These happen throughout the year and don’t always feel important at the time, but they add up.

And even if you used the standard deduction this year, it’s still a good idea to keep those receipts. Next year may be different, and some states allow certain deductions even if the federal standard deduction is used.

Keeping track of these as they come in can make a big difference later.

👉 Which of these are easiest to overlook?

I just came across this article on Daily Money Management and thought it was especially relevant for financial advisors: https://www.wealthmanagement.com/high-net-worth/the_case_for_daily_money_management

What stood out to me is how clearly the article explains the role of a Daily Money Manager from an advisor’s perspective. It reflects what I see in practice every day: when financial advisors and Daily Money Managers work together, it leads to better outcomes for clients. In many ways, it’s a true triple win – for the client, the advisor, and the DMM.

For advisors, having a DMM involved can help strengthen client relationships, provide an extra layer of oversight, and reduce the day-to-day administrative burden.

Daily Money Managers focus on the practical side of finances—bill paying, tracking, organization, and coordination with other professionals—so clients can feel more at ease and advisors can stay focused on planning and strategy.

Advisors offering bill-paying services can build stronger client relationships, attract niche markets, and meet ethical obligations effectively.

Tax season can feel overwhelming… but often it’s not the taxes themselves.

It’s the search for information.

Have you ever spent time trying to locate documents that were technically saved, just not in one consistent place?

A simple habit that can make a big difference:
Keep all tax-related documents in one place throughout the year.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. A folder, a box, or a digital folder all work. What matters is consistency.

Every document goes there as it comes in, rather than waiting until filing season.

This small step can make things much easier when tax season comes around.

Next week, I’ll share what typically gets missed, even when people feel organized.

An excellent description of what Daily Money Managers do for their clients!

From paying bills and organizing financial documents to coordinating with accountants and helping prevent costly mistakes, Daily Money Managers take care of the day-to-day financial details that can quickly become overwhelming.

For many people, especially during life transitions or later in life, this kind of support means less stress, more clarity, and the ability to stay independent longer.

This New York Times article does a great job highlighting the real impact of this work:

Daily money managers generally help older adults and the wealthy, but busy professionals are increasingly using their services when they get behind.
