As people in Los Angeles have experienced over the last several days, earthquakes are a regular occurrence.

In fact, hundreds occur every month across the West Coast. This map from the USGS indicates the number of earthquakes that have occurred in just the last week. Although most are small, experts agree we are overdue for a larger, more devastating earthquake.
