So many problems, but this very long article doesn’t even address some of the worst problems in the system. So many of my clients have had issues with HMOs and their “In-network” options—just because your doctors accept the plan, doesn’t mean you can see them all. With an HMO all of your doctors have to accept the plan AND be in the same (sub) network.

Please be extremely cautious with HMOs if you need specific doctors or have serious chronic conditions.

State agencies say they’re holding insurers accountable for errors in provider directories. But ProPublica found that the actual actions taken so far do not match the regulators’ rhetoric.

Fun fact: Gorillas hate water. They avoid rivers, lakes, streams, and are even afraid of rain. They don’t even drink water.

Not so fun fact: It’s not enough to make sure your doctors accept your health plan. If you have an HMO, your providers also need to be a part of complimentary medical practices so they can refer to each other.

It’s complicated, because some doctors participate in over a dozen groups, and some of those groups have different contracting arrangements with different insurance carriers.

If you have multiple, critical providers, be sure to verify your plan will cover all those interactions.
