Continuing our series on auto insurance myths!
If My Friend Borrows My Car and Crashes, Their Insurance Pays… Right?
Not so fast! This is one of the biggest auto insurance myths out there.
❌ Myth: If someone else is driving my car and gets into an accident, their insurance covers the damage.
✅ Truth: Car insurance follows the car, not the driver. If you let a friend borrow your car and they cause an accident, your insurance is typically responsible—not theirs. 😬
💡Here’s how it usually works:
🔹Your auto insurance is the primary coverage for damages.
🔹 Your friend’s insurance may help as secondary coverage, but only in certain situations.
🔹 If the accident is serious, you could be on the hook for deductibles and increased premiums.
🚦 Before handing over the keys:
✔️ Make sure they have a valid license.
✔️ Check if your policy includes permissive use (coverage for occasional drivers).
✔️ Remember—you’re also taking on the financial risk.
