Are you prepared for cold weather when it comes to your homeowners insurance?

As temperatures drop, is your home ready to handle the risks winter brings—and do you know how your homeowners insurance responds? Frozen pipes, snow and ice buildup, fallen trees, and power outages are common cold-weather issues that can lead to costly damage if you’re not prepared.

Have you taken steps to prevent frozen pipes by insulating exposed plumbing, keeping your home heated, or letting faucets drip during extreme cold? Do you know whether your policy covers sudden water damage—and what maintenance responsibilities are expected of you?

What about your roof and exterior? Is heavy snow or ice putting extra strain on your home, and have you addressed potential ice dams or overhanging tree branches before winter storms arrive? If something does go wrong, do you have photos or videos of your home and belongings to make the claims process easier?

Cold weather doesn’t have to mean cold surprises. Are you prepared with the right prevention plan—and the right homeowners insurance coverage—to protect your home all winter long?

With all that has happened please keep in mind not all people are there to help you. As unfortunate as it is that this has to be said there are people out here taking advantage of the situation. Her are some red flags before you hire someone to help you during this time.

1) If they won’t provide you with an estimate. A verbal quote can always be changed. If they can provide a verbal, they can put it on a piece of paper.

2) If the estimate is including 8 hour minimum charges.

3) If the contractor starts talking about emergency service charges.

4) If the contractor comes in stating “don’t worry about the estimate, we will work with the insurance company.”

5) Make sure they are licensed and insured. Not just stated but they will provide this info if they are legit.

Please be careful. Make sure you take pictures of how many men they had, the equipment used and how many hours they are there. There are a lot of good companies doing everything the can to help the right way.
