Mark your calendar! It’s a day for celebration! On March 5, 2026, during National Consumer Protection Week, the Social Security Administration (SSA) and its Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General (OIG) will once again lead National Slam the Scam Day. Are you excited yet?

The mission is simple but urgent: To help Americans recognize government imposters and stop scammers before they steal money or sensitive personal information.

Officials are encouraging the public to use resources from SSA and the Federal Trade Commission to better identify fraud tactics.

Among the biggest red flags? An unexpected “problem” with your benefits, a surprise prize, or promises of a sudden increase in government payments. Scammers often layer on pressure, urging immediate action.

Another major warning sign is a demand for unusual payment methods. If someone insists on cryptocurrency, gift cards, gold bars (really?), cash, or wire transfers, especially with claims they are “keeping your money safe,” it is almost certainly a scam.

SSA urges Americans to spread awareness by sharing information with friends and family. Suspicious Social Security-related activity should be reported to SSA’s OIG, while other fraud can be reported through the FTC.

The message is clear: recognize the signs, speak up, and slam the scam before it slams you.
