🚨 **New Mastercard anti-scam rules are now in effect.**
As of **July 24, 2026**, Mastercard has rolled out new requirements aimed at identifying and removing merchants engaged in potential scam activity.
Under the new program, payment processors (acquirers) are required to investigate merchants within **72 hours** if certain fraud risk indicators are triggered. These include things like:
• A sudden drop in authorization approval rates
• High levels of refunds or chargebacks
• Reports of scam activity from multiple card issuers
• Alerts from fraud monitoring services
• Investigations initiated through Mastercard's fraud programs
For legitimate businesses, this means **greater scrutiny of transaction activity**, especially for online (card-not-present) merchants. Keeping authorization rates healthy, minimizing chargebacks, responding quickly to customer disputes, and maintaining strong fraud prevention practices are becoming more important than ever.
This is another reminder that payment processing isn't just about accepting cards anymore, it's also about maintaining compliance and protecting consumers from fraud.
