I have spent so much of my life acting out of obligation, usually to some invisible "them" who I believed was keeping score of how good of a mother, wife, friend, woman I was or wasn't.
Turns out the invisible "them" is the systems we live inside of - patriarchy, white supremacy, capitalism, diet culture, ableism. I was measuring myself by the fu**ed up standards of our culture, some warped caricature of what a "perfect woman" looks and acts like.
The biggest lie I bought into from these messages was that my needs didn't matter; that I was here to serve and care for others at whatever cost to myself.
I have spent a decade unpacking these beliefs. And I still have more work to do because the messaging runs deep and has many layers. At its core, this is the work of Badass Self-Care.
The new message I am working on embodying and sharing with the world is this: You deserve the same beautiful care that you so generously give to others.
I know that many women have a habit of putting other people's needs above their own. This can be especially true for mothers but I believe it impacts all women. I want you to know that you can take care of yourself and still care for others. In fact, you will be a better version of yourself when you are well-rested, nourished, and well-resourced. You taking care of yourself is good for you and for the people around you.
I don't believe in convincing women to care for themselves in order to better serve other people - that's the same old bu****it messaging. And I have to acknowledge that it is actually true - you will be better able to care for others when you are caring for yourself. But that's not why I want you to practice self-care! I want you to practice self-care simply because you deserve care.
This work is so important and impactful. If it speaks to you, I hope you will join me for Badass Self-Care 2022.
