It’s been over 10 years since I got a muley, but this season I was determined to get one!

Last year I hadn’t seen a SINGLE muley buck. I was new to the mountain range AND I had no idea where to find muleys.

I started my pre-season scouting back in June. I found 4 bucks of varying sizes, and was so stoked that muley bucks existed😂

Then fall bear season came, and I visited the area and found what I believe to be this same buck, hanging with some does.

Now with r***e open, I was ready to get after one them. I saw a little forked buck and yes, I was tempted, not having shot a muley buck for 10+ years. But I heard the 360 instructors’ voices in my head about passing up smaller bucks to let them grow and targeting more mature game.

So I kept pushing, working the area where I saw the bucks in the pre-season. 4 miles later, I came up to a spot to sit down and glass.

I set my gun down, and right as I kneeled down, I jumped this buck right below me.

He tried to look up at me above him on the rocks, but I shot him. He jumped a few yards and I shot him again.

I came down off the rocks, and was so happy to see a nice 4x5!

I always am grateful for everything I learn from the 360 Sportsman instructors. I try to soak in everything and apply it, and I find that 100% of the time that I just listen and do what they say it works out.

Thankful for Tom Schneider for his Mule Deer Hunting masterclass. I would listen to it on my drives up the mountain and while I’d glass and scout.

Everything from habitat to the buck’s behavior, my hunting strategy was textbook to that course.

So grateful for another tag filled this year, more knowledge gained, and happy memories.

Things Tana and Adam Grenda started doing because they were tired of Euro mounts taking forever...

1. They started making sure as much meat as possible was removed upfront. Less leftover tissue means less work later in the process.

2. They started steaming instead of relying on boiling to help clean the skull while protecting the bone.

3. They started powerwashing to remove loosened tissue and speed up the cleaning process.

4. They made sure skulls were completely dry before moving on to whitening, helping them get a clean, finished result.

5. They refined their whitening process to get that clean, bright look that makes a European mount stand out.

Here are 5 knife-making tips that can save you time, frustration, and wasted materials...

1. Don’t rush the grinding process. Take your time removing material so you can keep your blade symmetrical and avoid grinding away more steel than you intended.

2. Don’t guess at heat treating. It’s one of the most critical steps in knife making. Get it wrong, and your blade might not have the hardness and toughness you need.

3. Don’t overlook your steel selection. Different steels have different properties, so make sure you understand what you’re working with before you start.

4. Don’t wait until the end to think about your handle. Plan it out early so the finished knife feels comfortable in your hand and comes together the way you intended.

5. Don’t try to figure everything out through trial and error. Learning from someone who’s been making knives for years can help you avoid costly mistakes and get better results.
