Let's talk about escrow accounts for a second, because I get asked about this all the time. 📋
Once you close on your loan, your servicer sets up an escrow account. Every month when you make your mortgage payment, a portion of that money gets set aside for your property taxes and homeowner's insurance. When those bills come due, your lender or servicer pays them for you.
Each year, the lender does an escrow analysis to make sure the right amount is being collected. If your property taxes go up or down, you might end up with a shortage or an excess — and they'll adjust your payment accordingly.
That's it. Not complicated, but nobody explains it until you're staring at a statement wondering why your payment changed. 💡
