Supportive Divorce Solutions The financial side of divorce, made clear. https://divorcetalkwithjillian.com

Understand your options. Make confident decisions.

The biggest fear women bring to me isn't the divorce itself. It's not knowing whether their share of the marital estate and spousal support will actually be enough to live on.

Here's the good news: you don't have to guess. We can calculate what you'd likely receive and what support could look like, so you can see what life after divorce would actually look like - before you sign anything.

Once you know the numbers, the rest of the divorce gets a lot easier, because you already know what you're working toward.

And if your divorce is already final, the same numbers tell you how to make what you received last.

If your support or alimony is backed by a life insurance policy, you need protection written into the agreement.

Ideally, you own the policy. That way your ex can't let it lapse or quietly change the beneficiary. If that's not possible, you should be named the irrevocable beneficiary, so you can't be removed without your consent.

Don't sign without this in place. Part 3 is coming next week.

Feeling Rushed in Mediation? That's a Red Flag in a Long-Term Marriage.

One of the biggest red flags in divorce is feeling rushed. Statements aren't collected, the process isn't thorough, and you're expected to take his word for what's there. Whether the pressure is coming from your spouse or the mediator, rushing can cost you, and it isn't fair to you.

Even in an amicable divorce, all of the information should be gathered before anything is decided. You deserve the time to understand what you're agreeing to. You should not be forced to do anything. We can help you slow things down the right way.

Know someone going through a divorce who feels rushed? Share this with her.

Winifred Sanderson is back, and she brought Wayne, Garth, Ghostface, and two SNL Spartan cheerleaders with her. The 90s were a long time ago, but a fresh start is always in style. Helping women start over is what we do every day, and nobody deserves a fresh start more than a shelter animal. That's why Supportive Divorce Solutions stepped up as a Platinum Sponsor of the Humane Society's 90s-themed Halloween event. Divorcing After 50? Don't Pay for His Broken Promises.

You worked hard to reach an agreement. If he doesn't follow it and you have to go back to court, you shouldn't be the one paying the legal fees to make him comply. Make sure your agreement says he pays those costs.

This is the first of three things every divorce agreement should include. Check back next week for Part 2.

Stuck in the middle of your divorce? Here's the #1 reason why:

You don't know what your expenses will look like after the divorce and you're scared the settlement won't be enough to take care of yourself, or to retire one day. Here's what I do differently: we map out your post-divorce expenses first. Healthcare, keeping the home, day-to-day basics, short-term and long-term costs, even alimony. Then we work backwards from there to figure out what the settlement actually needs to be. We don't guess and hope it's enough. We find out the numbers now, so you know if the settlement works — or if it needs to change. If you're scared and feel stuck in the middle of your divorce, this is for you.

Will you still be able to travel after your divorce?

That's one of the first questions we answer when a client comes to me. Recently I worked with a client budgeting $5,000 a month for travel post-divorce, close to what she spends now, and that's just one piece of what we map out. Knowing exactly what you want your life to look like after divorce is how we figure out what assets you need from the marital estate, and what kind of support you should be asking for. If you want to know how you'll afford travel and everything else that comes after divorce - this is for you.

Your divorce agreement says you’re getting the retirement assets. But will you actually get them? When retirement accounts and investments are part of your divorce, the details written into the agreement can have a major impact on what happens after the divorce is final. If the language isn’t clear about how assets will be divided, what paperwork needs to be completed, and what needs to happen after the agreement is signed, you could find yourself months—or even years—later still trying to receive money you were awarded. This is why financial planning during divorce matters. Before you sign your agreement, make sure you understand not only what you’re receiving, but exactly how you’re going to receive it.

Interviewing divorce attorneys? Here are 3 questions you need to ask before you hire one:

1. How fast will they respond to you — a day, a week, a month? (Yes, we've seen attorneys disappear on a month-long vacation mid-settlement without a word.)

2. When will the other side hand in account statements? Make sure your attorney has a plan to push for investment and retirement statements ASAP and a plan for if they don't come in.

3. How do they work with other professionals, like CDFAs and forensic accountants? No attorney can do it all alone.

Asking the right questions upfront can save you months of frustration later.

A $500,000 house and $500,000 in a 401(k) are not necessarily worth the same thing in divorce. This is an important distinction - especially for women divorcing after a long-term marriage with significant assets. It can sound perfectly reasonable when your spouse offers you more of a retirement account in exchange for keeping more of the equity in the marital home. The numbers may even look equal on paper. But are they really? Different assets can come with very different tax consequences. Retirement money may eventually be taxable when you withdraw it, while home equity can have very different tax treatment. That means an equal-dollar trade may not actually be an equal trade. Before agreeing to an asset trade-off, you need to understand the after-tax value of what you’re giving up and what you’re receiving. The goal isn’t simply to divide the numbers. It’s to make sure the financial outcome actually works for your future.
