Southwest Airlines has cancelled 15,750 flights since December 22nd. What can the meltdown teach us about financial planning?
Initially, they blamed the weather, but as time goes on, the problems are being revealed as a cascade of more systemic problems.
While things have gone smoothly for years, one crack caused a chain-reaction that caused a cascade of failures. We see similar systemic issues occurring within financial planning:
1) Complacency can be killer to any process. Like SW's 30-year old scheduling software, most financial 'experts' preach methods that haven't been effective since the 80's and 90's.
LESSON: Be sure you are working with someone that has access to ALL of the latest tools and techniques. If they are just using stocks and bonds, you're missing half of the puzzle pieces.
2) SW didn't have a good backup plan for staff shortages, tech failures, accommodating stuck passengers, etc.
LESSON: A successful financial plan can't just be a 'fair weather' plan. It must work even if there are failures in the system, such as having liquid money for emergencies, dying early, living longer than expected, getting critically ill or needing long-term care.
To be successful, you must create your retirement plan....
Then, test the plan BEFORE your plan tests you!
If you take advice from experts that are blaming 'the market' for their failures, it's time to move on.
