BIG NEWS FOR CALIFORNIA CAR ENTHUSIASTS!

California’s proposed “Leno’s Law” (SB 1392) could bring major smog check relief to certain classic and collector vehicles.

Right now, California generally exempts 1975-and-older vehicles from smog checks. If SB 1392 is signed into law, it would create a new pathway for qualifying collector vehicles from 1976 through 1985 to eventually become smog exempt.

It wouldn’t automatically exempt every old car. Qualifying vehicles would need requirements such as historical vehicle plates and collector-vehicle insurance. The exemption would also be phased in over several years, rather than making every 1976–1985 vehicle exempt immediately.

The bill has already cleared the California Legislature. Now it’s waiting on Governor Newsom.
