"You are not meant to be like everybody else...
"You just are not meant to be like every other [accountant] at every other [firm] in the world.
"This is meant to be special. It is meant to be higher. It is meant to be holier.
"And goodness knows, it is meant to be much more joyful."

Can the double-entry bookkeeping profession be a walk on the higher, holier, and joyful side of life?
Candidly, I started studying accounting about 34 years ago with an idyllic concept that I could be "of service" to people.
Inside corporate America, I very quickly became disillusioned and disabused of the idea that I could serve much. I found corporate life to be mostly soulless and a "do what your told" experience.
I found the occasional exception working for very small businesses, startups, family-run businesses, and working with people whose core values aligned with my own.
But, in general, corporate life was not what I signed up for, and I'm grateful that growth, learning, and continuous improvement didn't end at 49-50. It took me until then to finally walk away. (I always have been a late bloomer.)
7 years into running my own firm, and about 6 months into offering coaching services, and I'm learning more now than I have in more than 25 years.
In some ways I'm discovering the high, holy, and joyful side of my work for the very first time.
Not every day feels that way.
Some days are a slog and full of disappointment.
But I hope that I can hold onto this idea most days - especially the disappointing ones - and remind myself that...
