When a man named Booker T. Washington arrived in Macon County, Alabama in 1881 to start a school, he found no land, no buildings, and almost no money. What he found were Black Alabamians hungry for education and willing to build something from nothing. Students made their own bricks and constructed the first buildings with their own hands. From that beginning grew one of the most consequential institutions in American history.

Tuskegee University gave Alabama and the world the agricultural science of George Washington Carver, the veterinary medicine of the first accredited Black veterinary program in the country, and the aviation training of the Tuskegee Airmen who broke the color barrier in the skies of World War II. It produced generations of Black scientists, engineers, nurses, and educators when almost no other institution in the South would train them. Tuskegee did not just educate Black Alabamians. It helped build Black America.

The red brick buildings and pecan-shaded walkways of that campus in Tuskegee, Alabama carry the weight of all that history and the promise of more to come. It is a place where the impossible was made ordinary through discipline, ingenuity, and love of one's people. Follow Black Voices of Alabama for the full story of Alabama's HBCUs.
