Join Craft Pro Katie Sarac on Thursday, June 2 at 12pm EST, as she helps you create some special star-spangled gnomes to celebrate Independence Day. This quick, fun project will make a wonderful addition to your holiday decorations.

To prepare, get these supplies:
For the wood: One larger piece (13 inch x 11 inch x 1¼inch) or three planks of wood (plank one: 3 inch x 10 inch x 1¼ inch; plank two: 3 inch x 13 inch x 1¼ inch; plank three: 3 inch x 16 inch x 1¼ inch). You can get sizes that are different from those listed, just make sure they’re thick enough to stand on top of a table by itself.

For the decoration: One to three different patterns or sheets of 4th of July themed scrapbook paper (found at local craft stores), small container of water based glue sealer in matte finish, one strip of 80-grit sandpaper, wax paper or tracing paper, permanent marker, pencil or pen, scissors, napkins or paper towels, paint plate (an old plate or paper plate will do), 2 ounce bottles inexpensive acrylic paint in red, navy blue, white, dark, gray, peach, and black, water cup for cleaning brushes, newspaper or other protective cover for your workstation, and one old rag.

98-year-old Miss Margaret didn’t let the pandemic get in the way of her beloved Zumba class at her local Humana Neighborhood Center in Metairie, Louisiana. Not only did she log onto Zoom and start dancing from home, she helped her friends get set up so they could join too.

Then on August 29, Hurricane Ida made landfall on the Louisiana coast, upending the lives of Miss Margaret and millions of others. Even though many of the Zumba class regulars had to evacuate to other states, SilverSneakers Instructor of the Year finalist Deana Lejarza powered up the generator and resumed class just days later so Miss Margaret and her friends could reconnect in a positive, healthy way.

Congratulations to Miss Margaret for being named the 2021 SilverSneakers Member of the Year and proving a healthy active lifestyle is possible at any age —and for being such an inspiration to her community.
