Faculty Senator and CAJUA member, Leila Hudson speaks out about current campus concerns:

As new COVID-19 cases surge, all three of Arizona’s public universities are challenging the state’s ban on mask mandates in schools by issuing their own requirements. The University of Arizona announced masks must be worn in all indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. That’s wel...

CAJUA ANNIVERSARY

About a month into the pandemic last spring, we were forced to work from home with little guidance from the university as we watched COVID-19 cases rise in Arizona. Then, the university administration instituted deep pay cuts, furloughs and layoffs in the midst of the pandemic. Hundreds of students, staff and faculty came together to create CAJUA. We’ve challenged layoffs and pay cuts, the university’s irresponsible campus re-entry plan and the acquisition of an online university, among other issues. Most importantly, we formed Local 7065 of United Campus Workers (UCWA). Today, our wall-to-wall union includes students, staff and faculty working together with employees from the UA and ASU to improve conditions for all campus workers. What a year it has been. Onwards!

CAJUA stands in solidarity with Palestinians seeking their human right to live as equal citizens free from racist policies and state-sponsored violence.

We condemn the escalating military attacks that Israel turned into an open war on civilians. Palestinians are routinely denied the right to freedom of movement, health, and education. CAJUA is an anti-racist, anti settler-colonialism justice movement that seeks equality for all members of our community, including our Palestinian and Palestinian-American students, staff, faculty and community.

We will have justice when we create a world where George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Daunte Wright, Roger Allen, Derrick Gaines, Chinedu Okobi, and many others like them aren't murdered by the police in the first place.

Justice is no more Black & Brown lives lost to police violence.

The Coalition for Academic Justice (CAJUA) appreciates and welcomes the step that President Robert C. Robbins took to end the furloughs by 12/31/20. This is welcomed relief for thousands of employees after enduring months of pay cuts. We recognize that funding from the State of Arizona helped to end the furlough/pay cut plan. The CAJUA and the United Campus Workers Arizona (UCWA) will continue to advocate at the university and state level for just wages and increased investment in higher education. (View President Robbins' announcement here: https://tinyurl.com/ycq2z63y).

As we look eagerly to the promise that a new year brings, I hope each of you is enjoying a much-deserved opportunity over University Closure to relax and renew.  I am pleased to share new information that employee pay reductions associated with the Furlough and Furlough-based Salary Programs (FBSP)...

“Essential Work”

As 2020 comes to an end, all employees at the University of Arizona should be honored and celebrated for the work that they have done in the midst of a global pandemic.

The Coalition for Academic Justice at UArizona – CAJUA, especially thanks, acknowledges and honors the labor of custodial workers.

They are among the lowest paid employees, and who are taking on some of the greatest risks.

We won’t forget that that some of them were promised hazard pay, but have yet to receive it.

We won’t forget that some have been working for decades at the university, and are still earning just over minimum wage.

We won’t forget that they have seen their workloads triple; and are getting hurt on the job because they are trying to finish their work in the same amount of the time.

We won’t forget that they are having to forgo breaks and lunch to get their work done.

As we look toward 2021, the CAJUA wants all UArizona employees, students, and the members of the wider community to know that we will continue to honor and celebrate your work.

We will do our best to support you as we work together to create a better, more compassionate, and more inclusive UArizona.

"Trabajo Esencial"

“'Our message to folks at the top of athletics is maybe we shouldn’t have these contracts where someone who ends up having a really poor track record ends up getting rewarded,' said Celeste González de Bustamante, a member of the Coalition for Academic Justice at UArizona."

Arizona Athletics says the university will honor the terms of Sumlin’s existing contract, including all buyout provisions – with funding from athletics-generated revenue and sources.
