A storm doesn’t need to make landfall in the Finger Lakes to leave a local lesson. Isaias became the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season and made landfall far from us along the northern Gulf Coast. Its remnants are forecast to bring widespread soaking rain across New York State, including the Finger Lakes, Sunday into Monday, per the National Weather Service. A good soak, not a major flood event for our area.
For homeowners and small businesses, water is often the bigger coverage question. Flood damage is generally not covered by standard homeowners or commercial property policies. Separate flood insurance may be needed, and it typically has a waiting period, so it’s worth asking about before you need it.
Recent regional insurance-market reporting has connected higher premiums and more rate shopping with catastrophe losses and rising rebuilding costs. It also suggests easing reinsurance prices may help moderate increases.
