Have you heard terms like Part B Giveback, Part B Premium Reduction, Cash Back Benefit, or Social Security Giveback? They're all referring to a benefit offered by some Medicare Advantage plans that can help lower your Medicare costs.
In recent years, this benefit has become increasingly popular among Medicare Advantage plans, making it a common topic of conversation during Medicare shopping season. Curious how it works? Here are answers to some of the questions I get asked most often about the Part B Giveback.
𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗕 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁?
A Part B Giveback is a benefit that helps reduce the amount you pay for your Medicare Part B premium. The amount varies by plan and may reduce a portion of your premium or, in some cases, cover the full premium.
𝗤: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?
The plan pays a portion of your Medicare Part B premium on your behalf. You won't receive a separate check in the mail. Instead, the reduction is typically reflected in your Social Security payment or your Medicare premium bill. In other words, you'll either see a larger Social Security check or a lower Medicare bill.
𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲?
Eligibility varies by plan and location, but generally you must:
✅ Be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B
✅ Pay your own Medicare Part B premium (those receiving assistance with their premium may not be eligible)
✅ Enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan that offers the benefit
𝗤: 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗕 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸?
No. Only some Medicare Advantage plans include this benefit, and availability varies by county and ZIP code.
𝗤: 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗕 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁?
It depends. While a Part B Giveback can be an attractive benefit, it's only one piece of the puzzle. When comparing plans, think about the doctors you want to see, the medications you take, your expected health care costs, and the benefits that matter most to you. A giveback may help lower your Part B costs, but the right plan is ultimately the one that best fits your health care needs, budget, and priorities.
