Early spring is an excellent time to ensure your home's sump pump works correctly! This simple test could save you from a flooded basement. Sump pumps typically last ten years or more. The lifespan of yours depends on how often it runs and how clean the water is that runs through it.

Here's how to test your sump pump:
1. Grab a bucket and fill it with water.
2. Take the lid off your sump pump and pour in the water.
3. Fill your sump pit with enough water to raise the float until the pump kicks on.
4. If you’re filling the pit and the water level gets near the top of the pit, but the pump doesn’t activate, you may have a bad switch.
5. If the pump does activate, it should lower the water level in the pit, removing almost all of the water.
