Pluto (formerly the ninth planet in the Earth's solar system) was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in Arizona. Percival Lowell searched for the planet for over a decade with no luck, but his calculations were used by Tombaugh to help locate the planet on February 18, 1930. In August 2006, Pluto was no longer considered a planet due to new rules from the International Astronomical Union.
