The two Renoirs taken from the museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer this week weren't in storage. They were on loan from the Musée d'Orsay, on public display in the mansion where Renoir spent his final years, doing precisely what a great collection is meant to do: being seen.

That's a tension every serious collector navigates, at every scale. The pieces most worth owning are usually the ones worth lending, exhibiting, or bringing into a room to be enjoyed. And visibility, the very thing that gives a collection its meaning, is also what a thief is counting on.

The whimsical work of François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne has gone from a favorite among a relatively small circle of design collectors to one of the hottest categories in collectible design.

Their surreal sheep, animal-inspired furniture, and botanical sculptures now command extraordinary prices at auction. A group of Claude Lalanne mirrors, for example, sold for an astonishing $33.5 million.

Christie's is opening a wine and spirits boutique at its Rockefeller Center headquarters, its most direct move yet into the fine wine collector market. The shop will showcase the wines its specialists love most, with a focus on connecting collectors to the world of fine wine, collecting, and Christie's itself.

The move comes as the broader fine wine market reaches its strongest point in nearly two decades. Christie's wine business, once the largest in the world, currently trails Acker, Sotheby's, and Zachy's in global revenue, making this less an expansion than a recalibration. A flagship presence, in a flagship location, built for a category the house intends to lead again.

For collectors, the signal is clear: when the world's most storied auction house plants a flag this deliberately, attention follows. And where attention goes, value tends to as well.
