Perhaps it was the 1938 baseball signed by Babe Ruth, as a Brooklyn Dodger, that the collector inherited from their grandfather. A remarkable chapter of Olympic history prepares to change hands.

On 1 March, at the esteemed Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen, collectors will have the rare opportunity to acquire what is regarded as the world’s first Olympic medal, struck for the inaugural modern Olympic Games in Athens, 1896.

Estimated at $28,000–$43,000 USD, this is more than a medal. It is the origin of a global tradition.

At those first Games, silver, not gold, marked the highest achievement. Victory was defined not by convention, but by excellence. Only later would gold assume its familiar place atop the podium.

Engraved by the celebrated French artist Jules-Clément Chaplain, the medal carries the timeless symbolism of classical Greece: Zeus, crowned with laurel, holding Nike, goddess of victory aloft, and on the reverse, the Parthenon standing watch over the Acropolis. An inscription reads: “Διεθνείς Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες – Αθήναι 1896.”
