A few years ago, a parolee scaled the security gate at San Diego’s Marriott Marina and boarded an unattended 80-foot cabin cruiser, freeing it from its slip. The runaway yacht drifted into a neighboring vessel, and the owner suffered a head injury and fell into the water trying to fend it off. At the same time, another quick-thinking boater looped a line from his dinghy to hold the stolen yacht in place until Harbor Police arrived. The suspect was arrested and held on $50,000 bail.
It’s a good reminder that yacht theft isn’t just a property risk — it can put other boaters in harm’s way, too. That’s exactly why theft and third-party liability coverage matter as much as the lock on your cabin door.
